Family Keeps Murder Victim's Memory Alive During Holidays ...

One year after he was gunned down in his home, a family kept a murder victim?s memory alive on the evening of Thanksgiving.

Wilma Bevins said that she would never forget the night she received a call that her son was dead, a victim of a drive-by shooting.

Police said that two men have been charged in connection with Christopher Carroll?s death. The news did little to ease the pain of a mother having to bury her child.

This year, it was especially difficult for Bevins to have a happy Thanksgiving.

?I didn?t want to cook, but I did for the other kids,? Bevins said. ?I mean, I have to keep going. He?d want it that way.?

Carroll was inside his home on Dana Avenue when someone fired shots into the house, striking him in the head while he slept. Since then, family members return to the scene of his death to pay tribute.

?We do it from five to 5:23 because it happened at five in the morning and the 23 stands for the years we had him here,? Bevins said.

The family released balloons to mark exactly one year since Carroll?s death.

?His girls like that, so we keep on doing the balloons,? Bevins said. ?They?re sending their daddy mail.?

Heart-felt messaged on the balloons drifted into the distance, as pain lingered among the crowd. The ritual is filled with emotion, and helps the family heal.

?It helps,? Bevins said. ?It helps a little.?

The men charged in connection with Carroll?s death were expected to face trial in the next few months.
