Rarely do we hear of individuals landing career jobs through Craigslist.org, but Jonathan Harrison was one of the few. For the last five months, he?s been working at Mortar Advertising in San Francisco as an Account Coordinator. Here?s his story:
Jonathan graduated from the Lundquist School of Business in 2011 with a degree in Business Administration and a focus in Marketing. After receiving his diploma, he developed a very broad plan for his job search. ?I figured being broad in my desires would seem desirable to employers,? he said. However, this mindset quickly changed when he realized he needed to stand out in the sea of other applicants. Rather than applying to all job postings or telling potential employers he would enjoy any kind of work, he made a conscious effort to set his sights on advertising and marketing agencies that would allow him to apply his acquired skills.
?Knowing that working at an advertising or marketing agency was what I wanted to do, I decided to move back in with my parents so that I?d have the freedom to aggressively pursue a job at one of these agencies,? Jonathan said. At the height of his job search, he was sending between 5-7 applications each day. He also visited the Career Center in Portland to hone his resume so that readers would get the most out of it in a short amount of time.
Although he recognizes that it?s rare to find a career job through Craigslist, Jonathan skimmed its postings from time to time to keep an eye out for gems among the clutter. He eventually stumbled upon a position at Mortar, an advertising agency in San Francisco, which is where he?s now employed.
As Account Executive, Jonathan has been able to apply marketing knowledge to the work his group is doing. ?It?s a great way to work with creative types such as designers and copywriters, while being able to apply my business-oriented knowledge.?
Jonathan says he loves where he works and plans to stay there for the foreseeable future, but would eventually like to end up in Portland at Wieden+Kennedy.
Thanks for sharing your story and good luck in San Francisco, Jonathan!
