Pen On Fire / Writers on Writing: Robin Hemley interview

This is a Voices on Writing feature I wrote for the June issue of The ASJA Monthly, which I edit.? This is the unedited version. More Voices on Writing Q&As at www.asja.org; click on The ASJA Monthly.

Voices on Writing: Robin Hemley

Robin Hemley is the author of ten books of nonfiction and fiction and the winner of many awards including a 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship, The Nelson Algren Award for Fiction from The Chicago Tribune, The Story Magazine Humor Prize, an Independent Press Book Award, two Pushcart Prizes and many others.? His fiction, nonfiction, and poetry has been published in the U.S., Great Britain, Germany, Japan, the Philippines, and Hong Kong, and he teaches creative writing workshops around the world.? He has been widely anthologized and has published his work in such places as The New York Times, The Believer, The Huffington Post, Orion, The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, New York Magazine, and literary magazines.? The BBC is currently developing a feature film based on his book Invented Eden that tells the story of a purported anthropological hoax in the Philippines. His third collection of short stories, Reply All, is forthcoming in 2012 from Indiana University Press (Break Away Books) and The University of Georgia Press recently published his book A Field Guide For Immersion Writing: Memoir, Journalism, And Travel (reviewed by Steve Weinberg in this month?s What?s in Store column). He is a senior editor of The Iowa Review as well as the editor of a popular online journal, Defunct (Defunctmag.com) that features short essays on everything that?s had its day.? He currently directs the Nonfiction Writing Program at The University of Iowa and is the founder and organizer of NonfictioNow, a biennal conference that will convene in November 2012 in Melbourne, Australia.? ?

Your CV is intimidating. Have you always been a writer?

I?ve always written, but I haven?t always identified myself as a writer.? I come from a literary family: My mother was a short story writer, translator, and novelist, and my father was a publisher, novelist, poet, and translator. So, from an early age, part of my life included writing and reading.?

Your focus, for the most part, has been short stories, essays, and memoir.??What is it about these genres that grabs you?

It?s true I like the short form?essays and stories?though I?ve gone long several times, as well.? My novel, The Last Studebaker, was well-received and reviewed, and I?m only now working on a second novel.? I love the novel form, too, but I tend to write in whatever form interests me at the time.?

??????????? Workshops tend to focus on the short story. When I went to the Iowa Writers? Workshop as a young writer, I wrote a lot of stories, some of which made it into my first book of stories. I loved short stories well before that.? I used to love to peruse my family library and pull short story collections from the shelves.? That?s how I discovered Kafka, Borges, and Isaac Babel, among others.

??????????? After graduate school, for a couple of years I taught part-time at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and there I taught ?Essay Writing.?? This was a basic composition course, but here, I fell in love with the essay, too, largely through an anthology that the poet Donald Hall edited.? At the time, hardly anyone in the academy thought of the essay as an art form that held its own against the short story and the poem.? That?s all changed now, and I?m glad of it.? I think the short form interests me so much because these forms tend to focus on what?s not written as much as what is written.? The gaps, what?s left out, what?s left to the reader?s imagination?this is what makes these forms so vibrant to me.??

What's the crossover?

??????????? Can you repeat the question? I didn't catch that.?

Um, crossover?

??????????? Ha, sorry, my silly sense of humor displays itself.? Okay, crossover.? With my family background, you can see that crossover is inevitable.? I?ve never been one to declare genre loyalty.? Sure, writers tend to excel at one form, but there are many writers who don?t want to limit their creativity to just one form, and that?s certainly how I feel about my own writing.???

Tell me about your new book, A Field Guide for Immersion Writing.

??????????? This book arose directly from my book, Do-Over, in which I revisited past embarrassments and failures from my childhood.? When I was asked what I?d call this type of writing, I said it was an immersion memoir.? The term ?immersion? has long been applied to journalism but never before to memoir?when I was speaking to an editor at The University of Georgia Press about this type of writing, she suggested I write a book on it.? Over time, I expanded the idea to consider immersion writing in all its forms: memoir, journalism, and finally, travel writing?which of course involves immersion as well.?

This book crosses over a little bit with another book of yours, Turning Life

into Fiction, which has sold more than 50,000 copies.? I love life-based fiction. ?What prompted you to write it?

Turning Life into Fiction, likewise, came out of my engagement with the subject and a discussion with an editor, Lois Rosenthal, who founded Story Press and briefly revived Story Magazine.? I had been teaching about the transformation process in fiction, the ways in which we turn experience into fiction, and Lois asked me if I?d write a book about this for her.? I believe it was the first book that Story Press published.? Later, when Lois and her husband Richard sold their publishing enterprise, the book somewhat inexplicably went out of print, though it was selling well.? And so, Graywolf Press picked it up and it?s now in its second or third printing with them.??

Both A Field Guide and Turning Life into Fiction talk about use what

you're living through and write about it.??Is this the main way you find your

subject matter?

I find my subject matter in a lot of different ways.? As a writer, I?m fairly eclectic.? I?ve written from dreams and I?ve written about people who have nothing to do with what I?m living. One story in my forthcoming collection of short stories is from the point of view of a Portuguese spy on the ship of the explorer Magellan and another takes place outside of Chino, France, in the time of Joan of Arc.? Ideas present themselves in many forms, and if they intrigue me enough, I take them on.

Do you believe immersion journalism is a more...valid brand of journalism?

I wouldn?t use the term ?valid,? but I do believe that traditional journalists can be blind to their own agendas.? I?ve experienced this personally?how a self-righteous journalist can completely muck up a story and still remain self-righteous.?

??????????? My experience with this comes from my book, Invented Eden: The Elusive, Disputed History of the Tasaday.? This told the story of a group of 26 people who were ?discovered? living in the rainforest in supposed complete isolation in the Southern Philippines in 1971.?

??????????? For a while they were hailed as the ethnographic find of the century and a 45,000 acre reserve was given to them by the Marcos Administration.? For a while they were a world-wide sensation, supposedly living an existence that closely resembled the cave-dwelling lifestyles of our Pleistocene-era ancestors.

??????????? ?Then in 1986, a freelance reporter from Switzerland hiked into the rainforest unannounced and was told through interpreters that the Tasaday were a hoax, that they were simply local farmers who had been coerced into playing Caveman.?

??????????? Good story, but it wasn?t true.? The guy hiked in and out of the rainforest in a couple of days and believed his translator, a local anti-Marcos activist who had an agenda of his own.? Now, the world declared that they weren?t the find of the century, but the hoax of the century, and credulous reporters followed, all filing supposedly objective stories that agreed the Tasaday were a hoax, without knowing anything about the complex political and cultural situation of the Philippines at the time.

??????????? It?s called ?confirmation bias,? the idea that you pay attention to arguments and ?facts? that support your theories, and ignore or throw out anything that disagrees with your theories.? Everyone is susceptible to it, even supposedly objective journalists.? In this case, they created a mess.?

??????????? I spent five years researching the story, traveling around the world and meeting everyone alive who was a part of the story: journalists, academics, even the Tasaday themselves, and I found out that the story was a lot more complex and that the real hoax was perpetrated by the people who said the Tasaday were a hoax.? Yet the conventional wisdom today is still that the Tasaday were a hoax, mostly because of bad reporting that was broadcast on ABC?s 20/20 and taken as gospel.?

??????????? I simply think it?s good to own up to your biases, to allow the reader to see that a human being, and not a supposedly infallible news organization, has written the story and gathered the information.?

When doing immersion journalism or travel writing, I assume it's best to

come across as much like a non-writer as possible?

I wouldn't say that?s always the case; it?s only true of writers who write what I call an ?infiltration.?? Ted Conover, for instance in New Jack, when he was writing about being a guard at Sing Sing.? Or Kevin Roose when he, a liberal student from Brown, infiltrated the conservative Christian Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.? Short of that kind of infiltration, I think it?s good to be honest about being a writer?and I think that there are ethical considerations involved in the infiltration as well.? There?s no rulebook, but I have a chapter of ethical and legal considerations in which I delve into the writer?s responsibility to the subject.?

Talk about the marketplace, especially for travel writers.

I think there?s always a market for a well-written travel book.? I can?t say for certain because I?m not a marketer, but it seems to be a pretty strong niche.?

???????????

Quite a few publishers now print disclaimers on an opening page of a memoir that names have been changed.??Which makes me wonder: Should a memoir writer allow his or her subjects to vet the manuscript at any point along the way?

That?s a good question.? It really depends on what you?re writing about.? When I was writing Do-Over, one of the people I wanted to write about said that she didn?t want to be ?an incidental character in your adventure.?? I liked that. It made me think about my relationship to the people I wrote about.? In her case, I showed her what I had written and changed her name, but others didn?t ask that of me. I changed the names of anyone under 18 except for my daughters, but I also gave them the chance to read the manuscript before I sent it to the publisher.?

??????????? When I wrote Invented Eden, I didn?t have the luxury of changing names, and I needed to make sure that nothing I wrote was actionable.

??????????? Traditionally, journalists have resisted showing what they write to their subjects, but in some instances, that?s something worth reconsidering.?

Some have said the memoir genre is a crowded one. What do you think?

Every genre is crowded.? Thousands of novels are published every year.? Thousands of books of poetry.? There are plenty of good books and plenty of bad books of every kind.?

What's your opinion of the mountains of self-published books, and do you

think they help or hinder the publication and marketing of traditionally

published books?

I know of a couple of people who?ve self-published books successfully, but they are definitely the exception.? While I don?t think it carries the stigma it used to, there are so many exciting independent presses out there now.? Not only is it easier to self-publish, but it?s also easier to publish other people, to start your own press.? One start-up, Engine Books in Indianapolis, has published a short story collection and a novel by two friends of mine, both fabulous writers who might be relegated to the mid-list with traditional houses.? But they?ve been doing well?this publisher publishes two to three titles a year, and my friend?s short story collection was just reviewed in O: the Oprah Magazine.? So why self-publish when there are so many good independent publishers out there?

Many of your books have been published by smaller presses. In other words, not by the Big Six. Talk about the value of smaller presses.

I wouldn?t necessarily call them smaller presses. Three of my books have been published by Graywolf, which isn?t exactly a small press anymore, but a giant of independent presses.

??????????? In any case, I?d prefer to call these presses ?Independent? rather than ?small.?? My father was the founder and publisher of just such an Independent Press, the somewhat legendary Noonday, which in the fifties was what Graywolf is today.

??????????? One of the biggest strengths of independent presses is that they don?t necessarily have to be as slavish to the bottom line as some of the larger presses are.? They can take chances, especially those that are nonprofit, such as Graywolf.

??????????? A case in point is Noonday.? When my father was first starting it up in the 1950s he and my mother attended a cocktail party given by the owner of The New Yorker Theater, Dan Talbot.? In the middle of the party, Talbot shushed everyone and said he wanted to read this great new story that had just appeared in the latest issue of The Partisan Review, an important literary magazine of its day.? Can you imagine anyone at a party doing such a thing now?? The story in question was a translation by Saul Bellow of a then-unknown Yiddish writer, Isaac Bashevis Singer.

??????????? Talbot read the story and my father asked if Talbot knew Singer.? He did and a meeting was arranged.? It turned out that Signer was upset by the way that Alfred Knopf had edited his first novel, The Family Moskat.? According to Singer, Knopf had butchered the book, and so Singer was amenable to working with my father.? Singer and my father were a great match, and my father became Singer?s translator, editor, and trusted friend.

??????????? Independent publishers love literature.? That can?t always be said for the big corporate houses.? Matthew Arnold said that ?journalism is literature in a hurry,? but now literature is literature in a hurry.? What I mean is that that nurturing spirit is largely absent from large houses: If you don?t succeed right away, you?re out.? But independent publishers still nurture their writers for the most part.?

Let?s talk about teaching. How do you teach nonfiction writing?

That?s a difficult question to answer?but briefly I do it through a combination of manuscript critique, peer critique, and individual conferencing.? But it really depends on the venue: a traditional university, a weekend workshop, or a low-residency distance-learning model.? They all demand different approaches.? In general, I give students models in the genre in which they?re working, I sometimes use writing exercises (again, depending on the level), and I try to see what the writer is attempting to do and help him or her achieve that goal.? I?m working with so many different kinds of nonfiction writers that I have to tailor my approach somewhat to each writer.

How does teaching help or hinder your own work?

Sometimes it helps, sometimes it hinders.? It depends on the time of year and the students with whom I?m dealing.? I work with some mightily talented students and while I don?t usually find myself directly inspired by their work, I do get a vicarious pleasure in helping them turn their ideas into essays and books.?

Mental Health Mondays: On Death, Dying, Loss ? Lovely Healthy

Image

?The wound is the place where light enters you.? ?-Rumi

?Your pain is the breaking of the shel that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.? -Khalil Gibran

As many of you may know, my dad passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly early this summer. ?I had the great fortune of going back home last weekend to reconnect with family and friends for a memorial service in our hometown. ?It was the fourth funeral we?ve had for my dad, and by far the most difficult one.

I was asked to say a few words at the service, and a number of people asked me to share what I said in writing, so I thought what better way than to use Lovely Healthy to not only reach the people who were at the service but to help any of you dear lovely people who might need some healing as well.

Loss in?any?form, be it a death of a loved one, a breakup, a missed opportunity- is an immensely complex emotion to process. ??It hits you in waves, like invisible walls you don?t even know you?re walking through,? a family friend said to me when I called her to tell her the news. ?There are moments every single day when I catch myself in these waves, and I honestly don?t know how I?ll ever come through this pain. ?And then?..I?m back. ?Sometimes you have to breath it out, sometimes you have to sweat it out, talk it out, or cry it out, and sometimes the wave just??disappears.?

What has brought me comfort, dear hearts, is that everyone in the world experiences these feelings at some point in some way or another. ?Everyone loses their father, or has already lost one. ?Everyone has their heart broken. ?Everyone feels alone, feels sad, feels hopeless. ?These are universal feelings, which means they?are not unique to you.??You do not have to identify with the feelings of despair. ?You are not broken. You do not need to be fixed. You are?not your sadness and you are not your pain.? Instead, we can learn from these feelings and listen to what they are trying to teach us.

So. ?On that note. ?Here?s what I shared last weekend. ?I can?t take credit for any of it- it?s all filtered down from beautiful yogis, teachers and poets who have helped me navigate this and every challenge I?ve faced. ?Because I didn?t really write any of it down, here?s what I can remember:

We are shaped by darkness or we are shaped by light. ?The choice is ours and fundamental to the healing of the planet. Your healing is a service to others.

How you handle pain, challenges, and trauma determines who you are at the end of the day.

We get what we can handle.

Hold hands and stick together.

Everything that was beautiful is still beautiful.

Pain and joy can exist at the same time, as the same thing: as a celebration and expression of the love in our hearts.

Because a heart can only break if it?s full.

Light is reflected in Light. Love in Love. The Universe in You.

You are all beautiful creatures each and every one.

sat nam, beautiful people.

Recent Changes to SEO That You Should Know About - TRCB

Technology is changing right now. As you read this, countless programmers are hammering-away at keyboards, developers are planning apps and Google's team are considering the next update to the search-engine giant. Carried by these ever-shifting tides are businesses that rely upon the internet. Among them is Search Engine Optimisation: the practice of using a mixture of on and off-page material to promote and increase the ranking of a client's website on search-engines.

This is a practice which has been in-place since the inception of the web-search, and it is a lucrative one. In a society where much of our custom is completed online, the web-market is filled with corporations vying for customers by taking-advantage of every technological innovation available. Where technology changes, potential clients go, and where potential clients go, SEO must follow.

Many such market changes can be traced to Google itself. It is constantly releasing updates; to improve user experience, and to weed-out those who would negatively impact that experience. Negative techniques employed by such groups include 'blog spam', 'link farming', 'thin content' and 'keyword stuffing', and can be collectively referred to as 'Black Hat SEO'. One of the most common forms of Black Hat SEO involves creating poor-quality pages consisting of a hundred words or so (often copied from other sources), and adding links to a client or parent site. Generally, 'Spinning' software is used to mass-produce this content, by stealing existing articles and running them through thesaurus programs. However, this process has been severely curtailed by new updates, including 'Panda' and 'Penguin' in Google regarding the way the search engine handles duplicate content and key-word stuffing. This means that Google is placing increasing value on quality, informative and relevant content.

Another necessary change to SEO is diversifying links. A large part of the practice involves creating and baiting links through various sources, which direct back to the client's web page, due to links contributing towards a page's credibility and desirability. Again, such practices can be abused through Black-Hat firms, employing bots to spam blogs and community websites with links. However, in the wake of Panda and Penguin, websites' rankings will be far more heavily affected by natural-looking links from a variety of sources. This leaves reputable, white-hat, SEO to employ linking though medums such as social media. This 'online PR' is obviously intended to take into-account website popularity through people 're-tweeting' or 'sharing' links via sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Finally, the prevalence of alternate search-engines begs the question "what, nowadays, is 'best practice'?" Bing, for example, has breached the 15% mark in terms of market share, and Google holds only 68% of the market. Is the best practice for SEO firms to stick with the safe-option in Google, or is there a lucrative opportunity in Bing, which famously claims to be a "smart" search engine. As Bing grows in popularity, many SEO firms are likely to be considering its potential for a dedicated campaign.

In short, then, Google is not so much penalising reputable, legitimate SEO firms, as it is attempting to render-obsolete the tactics used by their Black-Hat competitors. It is noteworthy that some White-Hat SEO companies employing 'grey-hat' (questionable but not usually outright banned) techniques have also claimed to have been affected by Google's moves. Thus, SEO is moving towards producing higher quality, reputable content, and encouraging community-sharing to spread backlinks, as opposed to artificially creating them. On-top of this, the possibility of other search-engines becoming a profitable market of their own is slowly dawning, and SEO will likely be affected by whatever fate lies in-store for Bing and other such competitors to Google.

Zoocasa Real Estate Blog: Smart Ways to Finance Home Renovation

by Farhaneh Haque

In my August 9th Blog, Fixer Upper or Move In Ready, we weighed the pro and cons of each:? buying a property which requires work or finding your dream home with all the fits and finishes you like and can see! As a follow up, this week?s blog will dive deeper into the Fixer upper and explore financing options for a home renovation.

Balance wish list and budget

Finding the right balance between your ultimate wish list and what you can comfortably afford right now may be a big part of your decision of what to buy. Buying a home that might need a bit of work can give you the ability to transform it into your dream home, especially if you?re willing and able to take on some of the projects yourself. However, it?s important to understand the costs of the upgrades you intend to make and factor those in when deciding on a price range for a home that is affordable to you." ?

The benefits of renovating versus moving: If you?re not looking to change your location, renovation can be a smart and affordable way to upgrade your home to better suit your current lifestyle. You will also avoid the real estate commissions, land transfer taxes, legal fees, closing and moving costs that come with moving to a new home.

Financing a renovation: As you collect memories in your home, over the years you are also building equity; a home equity line of credit or a mortgage refinance allows homeowners to use the equity in their home to borrow money to finance a renovation. Crunch the numbers with the help of a mortgage specialist, who can help you decide if this is the right investment for you.

Choose renovations that save you money in the long run: Some renovations can save you money on your energy bill, qualify you for future tax credits or even save you money on insurance premiums.

Using the opportunity to revisit your mortgage terms: Your home needs a bit of revamping to meet your needs. With a little reflection, you may find your current mortgage needs a little updating too. While you are exploring financing options for a renovation, look at your current mortgage to make sure it?s still the best option for you. A few small changes could give you extra flexibility, save you money or help you pay off your mortgage years earlier.

Financing Options

The most suitable financing solution will depend on a number of variables. These include the total cost of the renovation, your household affordability and monthly cash flow, payment preferences, amount of equity available in your property, etc. Here are some financing solutions with ?features you can explore with your advisor before deciding on the best option:

-Can be set up as a 1st or 2nd behind an eligible 1st mortgage

Of course, the best-suited product will vary with the extent of the renovation. For example, a credit card, unsecured line of credit or loan option may be suitable for smaller or less expensive renovations, or perhaps for those expecting to receive funds from other investments in the near term in order to pay these off; whereas a larger or more expensive renovation will require financing with lower interest rates and an amortizing function like a mortgage refinance. Ultimately, the decision will ride on a number of dynamic variables that will be unique to your situation. The good news is that there are financing solutions available to fit any renovation budget!

Adult-onset allergies Your Health and Fitness - Beltrettginnie9's blog

Count yourself lucky if you escaped allergies as a child but it doesnt mean that you are home free. Food and/or environmental allergies may unexpectedly appear in adults in their twenties on up. Allergies develop when your immune system begins to attack normally harmless substances, such as food, pollen, animal dander, dust mites or mold. These allergens may produce symptoms in the nasal passages, eyes, sinuses, airways, skin and digestive tract. If you develop allergies, you will not be alone. About 54 percent of Americans are sensitive to one or more allergens, according to the National Institutes of Health. Depending on what allergen youre talking about, the rates are anywhere from two to five times higher than 30 years ago. Unfortunately, adult-onset allergies tend to be yours forever unlike childhood allergies that may disappear overtime. Fish and shellfish allergies are more likely than others to begin in adulthood although many develop allergic rhinitis or hayfever. Why adults may develop allergies There are many explanations or theories for why individuals develop allergies as adults. One theory is that developed countries are too clean. Our immune systems are malfunctioning because of lack of stimulation from bacteria and germs. The number of autoimmune disorders is disproportionately higher in sterile countries. Longer growing seasons, brought about by global warming, may be fueling an increase in environmental allergies. Researchers have found that plants are flowering earlier and producing more pollen. Another contributor to adult-onset allergies may be air pollution. Chemicals and other pollutants in the air may be making allergies worse. Individuals become more vulnerable to allergies as they age because their immune systems weaken. Exposure to allergens when the immune system is weakened as during an illness or pregnancy also may open individuals to developing allergies. Learning to manage allergies At this point, there is not one clear answer for why you may develop allergies but there are some strategies for coping. Limit your exposure by keeping your windows shut in both your house and car. Avoid prolonged exposure outside between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. when allergen levels are at their highest. Shower and change after being outside to remove allergens that tend to stick to hair and clothes. Monitor pollen levels for your area through the National Allergy Bureau. Start taking your medication 10-14 days before symptoms appear. Nasal steroids, antihistamines, decongestants and eye drops are available over-the-counter and by prescription. Schedule a doctors appointment if medications and sprays arent working. Allergy shots that reduce your sensitivity are another option. Use a Neti Pot regularly to clean the sinuses and clear the head of congestion. A Neti Pot is a small ceramic pot used to pour warm saline solution through the sinus passages. If you develop a food allergy, become an avid label reader. Food manufacturers must disclose potential allergens but check and recheck ingredients often. Sometimes, manufacturers change ingredients and add in an allergen you must avoid.

Investing Myths: stock dividend investing as a substitute for fixed - Blog

Stock dividends have?been a hot topic for quite some time.? There are many reasons for this.? Over the next several days, I would like to address a few things on my mind as they relate to?stock dividends.? ?

Today, I?ll focus on a dangerous investing myth having to with stock dividend investing.

The 10-year Treasury rate, even though it has risen over the past 4 weeks, now stands at an approximate 1.8%.? That?s right, for a 10-year investment in U.S. government bonds, you can earn a whopping 1.8% a year!? It?s no wonder that I?m frequently asked by clients (whose risk profile dictates a substantial fixed income investment) if investments can be switched from fixed income to?high paying dividend stocks.

The impetus for these questions stems partly from the reverse-sticker-shock yields themselves (1.8% doesn?t get you much!).? But there?s another reason these questions come up.??This investment myth is perpetuated by those in the financial media.? I can provide a countless number of examples where financial market pundits have advocated switching from low yielding fixed income to higher paying dividend stocks.

Here?s just one:? In late December 2010, Suze Orman had 5 money tips for 2011.? Her very first recommendation was, ?If you are investing, and you should be investing, you need to understand that in 2011 most likely bonds are over. You?re better off in good, quality stocks that pay high dividend yields ? 4%, 5%, 6%.?

Now, it?s not that I have anything against Suze Orman.? I actually think that she?s very effective at translating consumer finance topics to those considered less than literate in matters of finance.? I also don?t mean to point out that she was so terribly wrong with her call?even though she was as bond prices rallied during 2011.? However, I do have a problem with how absolutely irresponsible this advice can be for the very uninitiated?which is her target audience.

The fact is that risk equivalence for an investment in stocks is completely and totally different than an investment in bonds.? Stocks, no matter if they have high dividends or not, are just plain more risky than bonds.??Jeffrey Gundlach, the famed bond investor, provides a bottom-line example why by saying, ?If the yield on the ten-year bond doubles overnight from 3 to 6%, you?ve lost about 20% of your principle ? but if Microsoft?s yield doubles from 3 to 6% overnight, you?ve lost 50% of your principle.?? In other words, the two types of investments are apples and oranges.

Could it be appropriate for an investor to switch from more fixed income to high yielding stocks?? Absolutely.? Especially if the forecast is for higher future interest rates (as interest rates rise, bond prices go down) and better economic times ahead.? However, it?s absolutely mandatory that the investor?s risk profile will allow for the additional risk associated with increased stock exposure.

James Bianco accurately describes it like so, ?Rather than viewing dividend stocks as a way to capture extra yield, in the past we have stressed that dividend stocks should simply be viewed as a slightly less risky form of stock investing. As such, we should expect dividend-paying stocks to outperform during bear markets and underperform during bull markets.??? As evidence he uses data from the bear market of October 2007 to March 2009 where an index of dividend paying stocks outperformed the S&P Equal Weight Index by 10%.? On an annualized basis, dividend stocks returned -36%?versus -46% for the S&P Equal Weight Index.? In other words, the dividends?provided safety compared to other non-dividend stocks, but for an investor living on a fixed income, a -36% return may not be recoverable given liquidity needs and a shorter time horizon.

The long and short of it is that investors need to recognize the inherent risks in attempting to chase yield by replacing one asset class (stocks) for another (bonds).

Head of Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Abune Paulos, Dies Suddenly

The leader of Ethiopia?s largest Orthodox church died Thursday after receiving treatment for an illness in recent weeks.

The pope of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Abune Paulos, was 76 years old and had served as the Fifth Patriarch of the Ethiopian Tewahdo Orthodox Church since 1992. Paulos previously led Ethiopia?s 40 million Orthodox Christians, who constitute half of the country?s population.

Ethiopian official Mulugeta Aserate Kassa told BBC that Paulos had been ?very healthy? when he led a service in Addis Ababa on Wednesday. However, he was later rushed to the hospital. The cause of death has not been confirmed, although one opposition website reported that Paulos suffered a heart attack.

According to the MFA, the Office of the Patriarch has indicated that the Holy Synod will hold an emergency session to decide on the date and place of the funeral ceremony. However, as of this morning the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church had not released a statement on its website.

CT has previously covered the Orthodox Church expansion in Ethiopia, as well as church growth through government support.

Microsoft & Nokia to jump iPhone 5 launch?

Allan Swann Published 16 August 2012

Nokia may be looking to unveil its new range of Windows Phone 8 devices a week before the iPhone 5 is announced.

Nokia has been sending out invites to US journalists to attend a product launch of September 5, just a week out from the rumoured iPhone 5 unveiling. The invite appears to be a joint Nokia-Microsoft announcement, which means it will almost certainly relate to Windows Phone 8.

The rumour mill is suggesting that Apple is looking at unveiling its iPhone 5 on September 12, with a launch date just a few weeks later. Apple's iPhone sales have been poor over the last quarter as users wait to upgrade to the new device, which is expected to be a generational step change, complete with a new version of iOS.

The new Nokia Lumia range is a key launch for Nokia, which ditched its proprietary Symbian smartphone OS to join Microsoft's Windows Phone team - but failed to see any traction in the marketplace against Samsung's Google Android and Apple's iPhone devices.

Windows Phone 8 is expected to be a key generational step for both Microsoft and Nokia, and will integrate tightly with its Windows 8/Windows RT software which launches on October 26. Microsoft has also attempted to bring back partners such as HTC and Samsung, who showed little interest in Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft especially is determined to stay relevant in the smartphone world and has controversially cut off older Windows Phone devices, including Nokia's, from running the new software. This means any consumers that bought Nokia Lumia devices after the Christmas launch last year will be cut off from the new OS - unusual in smartphone circles, where phones such as the iPhone 3GS (now three years old) can run the latest software (albeit, poorly).

HBT: Mattingly suspended 2 games for arguing

According to Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has been suspended two games by MLB for arguing with umpires during Thursday?s game against the Pirates. Bench coach Trey Hillman will manage the final two games of the team?s weekend series against the Braves.

Thursday?s incident started after Matt Kemp was ejected by home plate umpire Angel Campos for arguing balls and strikes from the bench. Mattingly was tossed after coming out of the dugout to defend his center fielder.

Kemp certainly risked a suspension with his behavior, so all things considered, this situation could have played out a lot worse for the Dodgers. MLB executive vice president of baseball operations Joe Torre spoke with Mattingly on Friday and told him that his first priority should have been to get Kemp under control as opposed to arguing himself, so he?s essentially taking the hit for his player.

By the way, no word on if Campos will receive any discipline for his behavior in the situation.

Home Sales in Metro Chicago Real Estate Market Continue to ...

Home sales in the seven-county metropolitan Chicago real estate market continued to show improvement in two important respects, according to an analysis by RE/MAX.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 16, 2012 -?Home sales in the seven-county metropolitan Chicago real estate market continued to show improvement in two important respects, according to an analysis by RE/MAX. Sales of detached and attached homes increased an impressive 29 percent in July, compared to the same month in 2011, with a total of 8,490 homes changing hands.

At the same time, the average number of days that homes sold in July spent on the market before a sales contract was signed fell to 141 days from 166 days a year ago. That 141 day average is the lowest recorded for the metro market during any month since December 2007.

The median sales price of a home sold in the metro-Chicago market during July fell 6 percent to $173,125 from $184,000 in July of last year. The RE/MAX analysis is based on transaction information from Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC.

?One factor that may have put some downward pressure on the median sales price in July was an increase in the percentage of total sales represented by distressed properties (foreclosed homes and short sales). Distressed homes accounted for 36.1 percent of all July home sales in the seven-county area, up from 33.5 percent in June,? said Laura Ortoleva, a spokesperson for the RE/MAX Northern Illinois real estate network.

A positive factor for home values has been a steady decline in homes for sale. The active inventory in the seven-county metro area plus Grundy and DeKalb counties was 21 percent less in July than it had been just 12 months earlier.

Combined sales of detached and attached homes rose in each of the seven metro counties in July, topped by a 35 percent increase in Will County. Sales were up 30 percent in Cook County, 27 percent in DuPage County, 12 percent in Kane County, 18 percent in Kendall County, 32 percent in Lake County and 30 percent in McHenry County. In the City of Chicago, home sales were up 25 percent.

The median sales price increased in DuPage County, climbing to $220,000 from $217,750 a year earlier. All six of the other counties saw a decrease in the median price.

The average market time for homes sold in July was shorter in all seven counties and in Chicago. The sharpest reduction, from 182 days to 119 days, occurred in Kendall County.

Detached Homes

Sales of detached homes totaled 5,477 units in July in the seven-county area, an increase of 27 percent from the July 2011 figure. Average market time for those properties fell to 136 days from 157 days last year.

Sales activity increased in all seven counties and in Chicago when compared to July of last year. Only Kane and Kendall counties recorded gains of less than 26 percent, with Kane sales up 9 percent and Kendall sales rising 17 percent. The gains in the other counties were: Cook up 30 percent, DuPage up 22 percent, Lake up 28 percent, McHenry up 29 percent and Will up 33 percent. Sales in Chicago climbed 26 percent.

The median sales price for detached homes in July was $195,000, down 4 percent from 12 months earlier and 6 percent lower than in June of this year. From July 2011 to July 2012, the median increased in only two areas, Kendall County where it gained 2 percent, and Chicago where it rose less than 1 percent. The median sales price for detached homes fell 4 percent in Cook County, 3 percent in DuPage County, 6 percent in Kane County, 7 percent in Lake County, 6 percent in McHenry County and 5.5 percent in Will County.

Attached Homes

Sales of attached units in July were 32 percent higher in the metro area than in the same month last year, totaling 3,013 units, and the average market time dropped to 149 days, a 35-day decline and the lowest figure recorded so far this year. However, July sales still trailed those of June by 8 percent.

All seven counties in the metro area along with the City of Chicago recorded increases in attached sales during July when measured against year-earlier results. The top gains came in Lake County (47.5 percent) and Will County (45.5 percent). The other increases, arranged in order of magnitude, were: DuPage County, 37 percent; McHenry County, 35 percent; Cook County, 30 percent; Chicago 24.5 percent; Kane County, 26 percent and Kendall County, 19 percent. Cook County alone accounted for 2,110 attached sales, more than two-thirds of the metro total, with 1,286 of those in Chicago.

For the entire metro area, the median price of an attached home was $133,000 in July, compared to $150,000 a year earlier and $143,000 in June. The median sales price of an attached unit increased only in Kendall County, gaining 3 percent to $98,000. In Cook County, the median price was $160,000 compared to $177,000 in July of last year. In Chicago, which accounted for 42 percent of all attached sales, the median price was $243,500, a decline of 2.6 percent from July 2011.

As for the five other counties, the July median price for attached homes fell 7 percent in DuPage to $115,750, 6 percent in Kane to $108,100, 8 percent in Lake to $115,000, 10 percent in McHenry to $97,500 and 11 percent in Will to $110,000.

Washington Woman Files Complaint Against NOM, Preserve Marriage WA

Posted by: Bridgette P. LaVictoire on August 17, 2012.

Sandra Turner Fukumoto has filed a complaint against Preserve Marriage Washington and the National Organization for Marriage. The filing to the state Public Disclosure Commission alleges that both groups have not properly reported their finances. Frank Schubert, the political director for NOM and the campaign manager for PMW, though, disagrees.

The two groups are seeking to overturn Washington?s marriage equality law. PMW has raised under $400,000 to get the law overturned, but Washington United for Marriage has raised $5.8 million in support of the law.

The PDC?s officials will review the complaint, which is 188 pages long, to determine whether or not there is substance to this complaint and if it requires further investigation.

Mrs. Fields? is Turning 35 this Weekend - Franchising.com

Mrs. Fields? 35th Anniversary Hot Spots and Free Cookie Giveaways!

Broomfield, CO (PRWEB) August 16, 2012 -?This weekend marks the 35th anniversary of Mrs. Fields, an American success story of the sweetest kind. In 1977, after meeting with several different banks (who first devoured her cookies and then turned her down for a business loan), young mother and founder Debbi Fields persisted and finally achieved her dream of opening her own store on August 18 in Palo Alto, California.

During a quiet first day of business, Debbi took a batch of fresh cookies outside and walked up and down the boardwalk, handing out warm samples and leading a steady stream of happy customers back to her door. She learned something important that first day?this would be a business of selling smiles.

Thirty-five years later, the tradition of selling smiles continues although on a much larger scale. Today Mrs. Fields is an internationally recognized brand with over 325 franchised stores in 23 countries, as well as a successful gift catalog featuring online gifting (mrsfields.com), a delicious grocery product and successful licensing division.

As a tribute to their humble beginnings, Mrs. Fields is celebrating their 35th anniversary this weekend by handing out nearly ten thousand free cookies at five locations in four different cities around the country. The locations were chosen based on longstanding loyal customer bases, as a way to give back and thank customers for decades of business and smiles.
