Southern California loses to No. 4 Stanford 79-55

Southern California stayed close early against No. 4 Stanford, holding Pac-12 leading scorer Chiney Ogwumike to eight points in the first half.

But Ogwumike and Joslyn Tinkle proved too much in the low post in the second half as USC lost to the Cardinal for the 12th straight time, 79-55 on Friday night.

Alexyz Vaioletama scored 14 points and Cassie Harberts added 13 for the Trojans (8-16, 5-8), who have dropped five in a row and eight of nine. They shot 33 percent from the floor and went 13 of 17 from the free throw line.

"The first half we had a good game plan keeping Chiney contained, especially in the low post," Vaioletama said. "The second half it was pretty difficult."

Opening a stretch of four straight games against ranked opponents, USC came out aggressively. There were five lead changes and two ties in the first half before Stanford pulled away over the final 4:58.

Stanford outscored USC 12-2 to end the first half leading 31-19, the Cardinal's first double-digit lead of the game.

The Trojans pulled to 19-17 on a 3-pointer by Ariya Crook before Amber Orrange sparked the Cardinal's run with eight points.

Both teams committed eight turnovers each, but Stanford shot 46 percent from the field to USC's 27 percent.

"They stepped up their tempo offensively," USC coach Michael Cooper said. "We know we have to rebound to play with the top teams in the country."

Ogwumike finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds for her record-setting 20th double-double of the season, and Tinkle added 17 points and 11 rebounds to help keep the Cardinal (23-2, 12-1 Pac-12) tied with No. 6 California atop the league standings. The Golden Bears beat 15th-ranked UCLA 79-51 earlier Friday. Stanford earned its ninth straight victory and improved to 14-0 away from home this season.

Ogwumike scored Stanford's first seven points of the second half before Sara James and Tinkle hit back-to-back 3-pointers that pushed the lead to 44-29.

"They picked up their intensity and got up in our face," Harberts said. "We didn't respond and stayed at the same level."

Tinkle, Mikaela Ruef and Ogwumike combined for a 20-10 run that extended Stanford's lead to 64-39. Tinkle had nine points, Ruef six and Ogwumike four. Tinkle helped the Cardinal to a 36-16 edge in the paint and a 46-33 edge on the boards.

USC managed to end Stanford's streak of holding its previous three opponents to under 50 points. The Trojans shot 31 percent from 3-point range, better than the nation-leading 24 percent that Stanford had been allowing from behind the arc.

The win completed a season sweep by Stanford, which beat USC 75-66 last month. The Trojans haven't beaten the Cardinal since a 73-72 win on Jan. 6, 2008.

"This season has been really difficult," Vaioletama said. "We come into every game like we having nothing to lose, like we can be the team to ruin everybody's season."

PST: Messi scores goals No. 300, 301 with Barcelona

Two weeks after knocking off Real Madrid, Granada positioned themselves for an even bigger upset when they took a 26th minute lead today on visiting Barcelona. But after taking halftime to think it over, Lionel Messi, who came into Saturday?s match with 299 career all-competition goals, decided Bar?a wasn?t going to replicate their rivals? error. Thanks to his second half double, Messi brought Barcelona back for a 2-1 victory.

The double raises Messi?s season total to 48 goals in 36 games. His 37 league tallies are 13 more than second-best Cristiano Ronaldo. He?s?also scored 13 times (in 11 games) since the turn of the calendar.

Messi?s first came with Granada packed deep into their own end just after halftime. Cesc Fabregas let loose from 23 yards, and when Granada goalkeeper To?o blocked the shot back in front of goal. With Messi having peeled away from the defense after Fabregas released the shot, he was in perfect position for the put back:

Messi?s second could have been a response to Gareth Bale?s mid-week golazo, with a direct kick from the middle of the field giving the Barcelona star his choice for posts from just over 24 yards out. He chose left:

The win leaves Barcelona 15 points up on Atl?tico Madrid, who play at Real Valladolid tomorrow. They have a +53 goal difference and is on pace for 126 goals and a record 103 points.

They also take on Mario Balotelli and Milan on Wednesday in UEFA Champions League.

Business Building | Why Interviews Are the Best Marketing Tool ...

Lately, you?ve asked me if based on all the successful experts I?ve interviewed, if I could pick the ONE thing that makes people successful marketers.

While there isn?t a magic formula for success (everyone gets there their own way ? if you want to hear hundreds of success stories ? grab a free charter membership in my strategy links club where you get a new success story each week), there is something that everyone who I?ve seen succeed has in common.

Want to know the secret?

They take part in interviews. They are regularly interviewing other people as well as being interviewed. Not only does taking part in interviews boosts your own credibility, it puts you and your expertise in front of other people?s audiences.

And, interviews are easy to do, don?t cost a fortune and you can start right now. So, if they are so easy to do, why aren?t you doing them? When I ask people that question, they immediately get a deer in the headlines look of pure terror in their eyes. Do you feel overwhelmed too? You don?t have to be. Here is my best two word advice for getting started successfully ? start small.

Here?s my quick and easy guide to getting started with your first interview.

1.? Call a friend to interview (or be interviewed).?? Find someone who doesn?t make you nervous ? it doesn?t have to be someone involved in your niche.? Someone who you feel comfortable with is best.

2. Sign up for a bridge line.? When you are just getting started freeconferencecall.com is fine.? I use Instant Teleseminar (which is a paid service) because it makes running in interviews *so* easy. (If you want to try Instant Teleseminar out ? click here for a 21 day trial).

3. Set a time for the interview and set it up on your bridge line.? If you are feeling very brave ? let your list (or just your friends) know about the interview.? Or, you can record it and edit it later (I personally like audacity (free!) for editing.

4. Give your friend questions to ask you.

5.? On the interview day, find a quiet room and relax?

6. Have a great conversation.

That is really all there is to it.? And, believe me the second interview is a thousand times easier than the first? and the third interview is a piece of cake.

Acupuncture May Reduce Hot Flashes in Breast Cancer Patients

A recent study suggests that acupuncture may reduce hot flashes in women with breast cancer undergoing anti-estrogen therapy.

In breast cancer, some cells begin growing abnormally. The cells divide more rapidly than healthy cells and may spread through the breast tissue to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body (metastasize). The most common type of breast cancer begins in the milk-producing ducts, but cancer may also occur in the lobules or in other breast tissue. Estrogen and progesterone receptor tests are usually performed on the malignant cells. These tests help determine whether female hormones affect the way the cancer grows. If the cancer cells have receptors for estrogen, progesterone or both, the doctor may recommend treatment with a drug tamoxifen.

Tamoxifen is an anti-estrogen and works by competing with the hormone estrogen by binding to estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells. By blocking estrogen in the breast, tamoxifen helps slow the growth and reproduction of breast cancer cells. Tamoxifen is taken orally, and possible side effects include hot flashes. Acupuncture has been suggested as a possible treatment for tamoxifen-related hot flashes.

In a new study, researchers investigated the effect of acupuncture on breast cancer patients with anti-estrogen therapy-related hot flashes. Ten women who were receiving tamoxifen or anastrozole, another anti-estrogen drug, were assigned to receive acupuncture treatments three times weekly for four weeks. Participants rated their hot flash severity by the visual analogue scale and a hot flash score.

The researchers found that in all participants, hot flash severity was significantly reduced on both the visual analogue scale and the hot flash score when compared to before treatment. Furthermore, the alleviation of hot flash symptoms remained four weeks after the final acupuncture session.

While promising, further well-designed clinical trials evaluating larger patient populations are needed before a conclusion can be made.

MOO rolls its own tagging app, but NFC business cards still MIA

MOO NFC

MOO's NFC-enabled business cards still aren't available to the public just yet (we've got a tester version we like to flash around at parties and such), but the company today gave word that it's rolled its own NFC-tagging app.

The interface is simple enough. You can link to a web site, map, social networks, phone numbers and vCards, as well as read and reset what's on your MOO NFC card.

Now we just need some cards to tech up our wallets, and we're good to go.

WSJ: Sony will use Gaikai streaming tech to play PS3 games on the PS4

We're just a few days away from Sony's February 20th "see the future of" PlayStation event where we expect to see the next edition of its home console, and the rumor mill is buzzing. The latest one tonight comes from the Wall Street Journal, with a report that connects Sony's $380 million purchase of cloud gaming service Gaikai last year with a method to provide backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 4. The WSJ reports Sony has been "investing heavily" in preparing Gaikai for an influx of PS4-equipped gamers, while also developing better cameras for its Move and the DualShock+touchpad controllers we've seen recently.

What's not revealed however, is any potential pricing plan, or whether cloud games will work users existing cloud saves. While buying fully digital copies of games we already own is less than appealing, if Sony can implement something like the abandoned UMD-to-PSP Go "good will" plan, then there may be benefits for all.

House, Senate bills aim to equalize benefits for same-sex military families

WASHINGTON ? A pair of bills introduced in the U.S. Congress this week would change the definition of ?spouse? in four areas of U.S. Code related to recognition, support, and benefits for married service members and veterans, in an effort to provide key military benefits for same-sex spouses of gay service members.

Charlie Morgan

The Charlie Morgan Military Spouses Equal Treatment Act of 2013, named for New Hampshire National Guard Chief Warrant Officer Charlie Morgan who passed away earlier this week after a battle with breast cancer, was introduced in the U.S. Senate on Friday, and would to make additional benefits available to all military spouses and families, regardless of sexual orientation.

Morgan died Sunday, leaving behind her wife, Karen, who will not be eligible for survivor benefits because of the military?s policy on same-sex marriages. After Morgan?s diagnosis in 2008, she and her wife spoke repeatedly about how these practices against same-sex couples would devastate their family if Morgan died.

The bill was introduced by Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and is co-sponsored by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

?The story of Charlie Morgan offers a powerful example of why we need immediate action to end LGBT discrimination in our military,? said Shaheen.

?Charlie served on the front lines for our country, but because of her sexual orientation her family is wrongfully being denied many of the same benefits given to those who stood beside her. That is an unacceptable reality and I?m committed to doing all I can to make sure that no spouses, children and families are denied benefits they have earned and rightly deserve.?

?This legislation is an important step forward in achieving full equality for all of our men and women serving and fighting for our nation,? said Gillibrand, in a statement. ?Same-sex partners of military service members should not be denied essential benefits because of who they are.?

The bill is the companion to the Military Spouses Equal Treatment Act of 2013 (MSET), re-introduced in the U.S. House Thursday by Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), the House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member. The bill was first introduced in 2012.

Under the proposed bills, the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs would be required to honor any marriage that has been recognized by a state and provide a number of key benefits to the spouses of all service members.

?Since the repeal of ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell? there have been two classes of service members in this country ? one that receives the nation?s full recognition, support and benefits and one that does not,? said Allyson Robinson, Executive Director of Outserve-SLDN, an advocacy group for LGBT service members and veterans.

?By making an arbitrary distinction between gay and lesbian troops and their straight comrades, and forcing commanders to play favorites, the law as it stands harms all service members and weakens the force. This legislation fixes that problem,? said Robinson.

According to Outserve-SLDN, there are more than 100 benefits granted to service members, veterans and their families contingent on marital status.

Robinson said that the changes proposed in the bill would still be necessary even if the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) were to be struck down or repealed, because they address entirely separate laws governing support and benefits for military members and veterans.
