Stepping back in time to Victorian science

?We have three melancholics here,? says a Victorian gentleman to his alchemist colleague as I sit, freshly diagnosed, in a ?gin distillery? buried within the Old Vic Tunnels beneath London?s Waterloo.

This is just one of the rooms in The Enlightenment Caf?, an event inspired by the coffee-house culture in which scientists congregated to read, debate and relax, a movement which began in the 17th Century. ?It?s all about scientists talking about what they love in a natural and exciting way, in an environment that?s a little unique,? says creative producer Andy Franzkowiak.

It certainly is unique. In the distillery I?m handed a ?special herbal concoction? to reduce my levels of black bile, the apparent cause of melancholia. While I?m not convinced the Victorian cures all involved gin, this is a brilliant introduction to the widely held belief that diseases were caused by imbalances in the body?s four humours: black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood.

Feeling much better, I wander through the rabbit warren of tunnels, passing a makeshift theatre and a series of dimly lit rooms, each with its own scientist in residence, revealing the answers to questions you never knew you had.

In one, I?m treated to details of some incredibly gruesome poisons and learn never to drink cider from a pewter tankard (the combination produces toxic lead acetate). In another I discover I?m not too bad at the Victorian pastime of mathematical puzzles.

But these drop-in sessions are just one part of the Caf?. Soon I?m ushered into psychiatrist Tim McInerny?s office. Here, myself and five other "medical students" are guided through the examination of a patient from the Bethlem Hospital (played convincingly by one of the Caf??s actors). Between them they give a stark insight into the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in the 1800s.

The beauty of the event is the atmosphere - you truly believe you?ve stepped into another time; a world full of things you?re unlikely to see again. There is a real buzz throughout the tunnels, with excited conversations drifting through the air and performers encouraging you to get involved in all manner of activities - from speed debating to an Institute of Victorian Dating Etiquette.

To fire-scientist Claire Benson the appeal was the era. ?The Victorian age is an incredibly important time for science and engineering,? she says. From her demonstration in a makeshift theatre-cum-lab, I?d have to agree: it boasts the creation of Robert Bunsen?s famous burner and the invention of dynamite to name but a few.

Before I leave, I catch a shadow puppet show about the moon and a panel discussion where audience members are invited onstage to mime the debate topics (I?m particularly impressed someone guessed tempest prognosticator).

?The whole thing is really one giant experiment,? says Franzkowiak. If you ask me, it?s a resounding success. This is an unmissable night of entertainment, intrigue, and debate - with a touch of education snuck in when you aren?t looking.

The Enlightenment Caf? is in the Old Vic Tunnels from 1st - 3rd June.

Getting quick cash | BRYAN'S BUSINESS LOUNGE

Just because you received a structured settlement for your lawsuit, it doesn?t mean you have to wait for years to get the money. There are many settlement purchasing companies that will give you instant cash for your structured settlement. These companies can pay cash for the entire structured settlement or purchase your remaining periodic settlement payments. You can spend this lump-sum payment on anything-a house, college tuition, business investments or debts.

What Is a Structured Settlement?

A structured settlement, which typically results from a personal injury lawsuit, is an agreement where you consent to accept payments over time in exchange for the release of liability for your claim. A structured settlement can provide payments in almost any manner you choose. For example, the settlement may be paid in annual installments over a number of years or in periodic payouts every few years.

These payments are generally awarded through the purchase of one or more annuities from a life insurance company. Structured settlements can also be used with lottery winnings, contest prize money and other situations with substantial cash awards.

Structured Settlements Not Always the Best Fit

In theory, structured settlements are designed to provide long-term financial security to injury victims through tax-free payments. And for most people, the agreed-upon structured payment plan initially makes sense. However, a financial emergency, a business opportunity, an unforeseen medical expense, or a house purchase can put a strain on the injured party?s finances.

And the structured nature of the settlement may become too restrictive to cover major financial purchases. Also, a structured settlement may not be the best option for investing. There are many other investment vehicles that can generate greater long-term return than the annuities used in structured settlements. Therefore, some people may be better off getting cash for their structured settlement and then building their own investment portfolio.

How Getting Cash for a Structured Settlement Works

If you receive an award from your injury case, an attorney or financial advisor will likely recommend setting up periodic installment payments instead of giving you a lump sum of cash up front for your structured settlement. Then, an independent third party will purchase an annuity that will provide you with tax-free periodic payments.

Companies that offer cash for structured settlements have a variety of programs that can allow you to access any portion of your annuity. For example, you may want to sell as little as four year?s worth of payments or receive a lump-sum payment while still enjoying some portion of your monthly payment. Or you can sell your settlement for a large payment that is five or six years in the future. You can also customize an arrangement to get cash for a structured settlement based on your unique needs.

Here?s an example of how obtaining cash for a structured settlement works: Let?s say you were in an accident five years ago. The accident caused you to be hospitalized for several months and undergo nearly a year?s worth of physical therapy. So you hired an attorney and sued the responsible individual-or, rather, the person?s insurance company. Ultimately, your attorney advises you that you?ll be awarded a substantial sum of money.

After several months or years of negotiation, you receive a sizable settlement. However, the cash you get upfront is only enough to cover the medical expenses. The rest of your compensation is scheduled to be paid out in regular installments through an annuity over the next 15 to 30 years. Rather than being restricted to monthly or annual payments, you contact a settlement purchaser to secure immediate cash for your structured settlement. You?re then able to use the cash to enhance your current cash flow-rather than waiting on periodic future payments.

Legal Issues of Receiving Cash for a Structured Settlement

If you?re contemplating getting cash for your structured settlement, it?s important to contact a financial advisor. Most states have regulations that limit the sale of structured settlements, so you?ll need court approval to receive cash for your structured settlement. Federal restrictions also may affect the sale of structured settlements to a third-party individual. And some insurance companies won?t transfer annuities to third parties.

Also, before you attempt to obtain cash for a structured settlement, be sure to do your homework. Check out multiple companies to see which one can offer you the most cash for your structured settlement. You also want to examine their integrity, reputation and track record. This will help ensure you have the most positive experience obtaining cash for your structured settlement.

Receiving cash for a structured settlement is an ideal option if you need a lump sum of money to meet your immediate needs.

Obama says economy will come back stronger

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Friday the latest employment report shows that the economy is not creating jobs "as fast as we want," but he pledged that the economy will improve.

"We will come back stronger. We do have better days ahead," Obama said at a Golden Valley, Minn., Honeywell plant where the company has taken steps to hire veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The president was responding to the government's jobs report for May, which showed that only 69,000 jobs were added during the month. That was the fewest in a year, as the unemployment rate increased to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent in April.

Obama, in a tight re-election campaign against Republican Mitt Romney, said the economy still faces a number of challenges, including Europe's debt crisis and higher gas prices, which have hurt families.

"The economy still isn't where it needs to be," Obama said.

Romney told CNBC that Obama's economic policies had not worked and the new report was a "harsh indictment" of how the Democrat incumbent has steered the economy.

Obama later told donors at a Minneapolis fundraiser that the last four years had been "as tough a period in our country's history as anything in our lifetimes, certainly since the 1930s." He said his administration had tried to make "dogged progress" but acknowledged "we're not out of the woods yet."

He said Republicans had been driven in part by a focus to "beat Obama" and he hoped winning a second term would change that mentality.

"My hope, my expectation is that after the election, now that it turns out the goal of beating Obama doesn't make much sense because I'm not running again, that we can start getting some cooperation again," Obama said.

Obama told workers at the Honeywell plant that Congress could still take steps to help jumpstart the economy. While acknowledging the political realities of an election year, he said the November election was no reason for inaction in Washington.

"There's no excuse for it, not when there are so many people out there looking for work," he said.

He cited providing more money for states and local governments to help avert layoffs of teachers and first responder layoffs, saying the dollars could "serve as a buffer in case the situation in Europe gets any worse."

Obama wants Congress to support incentives to hire veterans as police officers and firefighters. He also was taking action to help service members with manufacturing and high-demand skills receive civilian credentials and licenses.

The veterans "job corps" is part of Obama's to-do list to spur job creation. It features a number of economic initiatives he has pushed before to help manufacturers, homeowners and veterans.

Obama was holding three fundraisers at a Minneapolis restaurant owned by the sons of Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton. Later in the day, he was headed to his hometown of Chicago, where he was holding three more fundraisers and staying overnight in his own home.

The events were supporting the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee of Obama's campaign, the Democratic National Committee and several state Democratic parties.

Movie review: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' is more grim than ...

Movie, movie on the wall, who?s the lamest of them all? In ?Snow White and the Huntsman? that distinction is pretty much up for grabs. A slumming Charlize Theron certainly does her part, channeling Joan Crawford via Faye Dunaway as the wire-hanger-hating wicked queen; as does the thespian-challenged himbo, Chris Hemsworth, channeling Sean Connery via Fat Bastard as the Huntsman, an ax-wielding brute with a burr. But if pressed, most would agree the rightful ruler is Kristen Stewart, channeling Bella Swan via Sinead O?Connor as the passive-aggressive Snow, a Goth maiden who?s been anointed, ?Narnia?-style, as the patron saint of femme power. All hail, Snow! You go, girl!

If this were a political ad instead of a summer blockbuster, Mitt Romney would appear beside the end credits informing us that he approves of this non-secular, anti-feminist message. Yes, progressives, Hollywood is up to its old hypocritical tricks, trying to pass off a petulant slacker ? a certified freeloading member of Occupy Castle Tower ? as a role model for strong women everywhere. Or, at least a far more palatable alternative to Theron?s man-eating gold-digger, who knows what she wants and isn?t afraid to plunge a few daggers to get it. But even she is slavish to the idea that if you?re a woman, youth and looks are everything. She also has the nasty habit of preying on other females, sucking the life force out of them to remain forever young. Why can?t she pick on a weak man or two, like her effete brother (Sam Spruell), the runner-up in an Andy Warhol look-alike contest? Or the equally effete Prince William (Sam Claflin), the not-so-arch archer, sporting more lip gloss than his childhood flame, the lightly driven Snow?

The mere thought of this makes the Hollywood suits shield their crotches and squirm. Which, translated, means we?re stuck with two-plus hours of girl-on-girl violence, abetted by angry dwarfs and a handful of men, including the Huntsman, eagerly agreeing to follow Snow?s lead, although she has no discernible plans for overthrowing a monarchy based on witchcraft (Christine O?Donnell, your broom has come in!) and sorcery. Oh, yes, and lots of swirling glass shards courtesy of first-time helmer Rupert Sanders, a former advertising hack who enlightens us on what a movie would look like if ?Mad Men?s? Pete Campbell were seated in the director?s chair.

Politics and stereotypes aside, ?Snow White and the Huntsman? remains a movie at war with itself. Its aesthetics are breathtaking, albeit cribbed from other ? much better ? flicks ranging from ?Lord of the Rings? and ?Narnia? to ?Pan?s Labyrinth? and the original ?Snow White? from Walt Disney. But the piece is utterly abysmal in the acting and writing departments. Yes, there are times when it?s so awful it?s funny, but mostly it?s just plain dull. And much of the blame for that rests with Stewart, who remains one of the least charismatic actresses working today. In Stewart?s flawless olive skin, Snow is just a cypher devoid of personality and moxie. Instead of taking hold of her destiny, she stands on the sidelines watching, hoping things will play out to her advantage. They do, of course, but only because the host of writers deem it so. In real life, a girl like Snow would be chewed up and spat out by anyone who came in contact with her.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Theron, whose mere presence commands attention. But without an experienced director brave enough to tell the Oscar-winner when to say when, she chews the scenery at a rate so voracious you can?t help recalling Faye Dunaway?s shameless vamping in ?Mommie Dearest.? Still, I?ll take Theron over the far-less-fair Stewart any day. I?d take them both, though, over Hemsworth, aka Thor, the hands down worst actor currently on screen. Take away his bodacious bod and impossible good looks, and what do you have? He can?t even generate a spark of chemistry opposite Stewart. But neither can Claflin as the third side of an obtuse love triangle no doubt perpetuated to engage the TwiHards.

Seldom has the acting craft sustained such a beating, a flaw exacerbated by Stewart?s intermittent stabs at an English accent and Hemsworth?s inexplicable deployment of an atrocious Scottish burr. What?s up with that? And what?s up with all the meticulously applied makeup and perfectly coifed hair? This is the Middle Ages, people; a time when humans rarely bathed and nary a face wasn?t caked with some sort of grime. Even the forest-dwelling dwarfs ? played by the likes of Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan and Toby Jones (all reduced in stature in more ways than one) ? always look crisp and fresh after battling slithering snakes and abominable beasts.

If only the storytelling were this clean and polished. Then we might have had a ?Snow White? with some oomph. It still would have been embarrassingly sexist, but at least it would have been more Grimm than grim.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and brief sensuality.) Cast includes Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. Directed by Rupert Sanders. 2 stars out of 4.

Azerbaijan: 40 arrested in Eurovision terror plot

(AP) ? Security services in Azerbaijan say they have arrested 40 suspects and seized weapons as they thwarted a series of planned terror attacks against the Eurovision Song Contest.

Targets included the song contest venue and major hotels housing foreigners, the National Security Ministry said in a statement Wednesday.

Azerbaijan has in recent months reported being the target of terrorist activities planned by groups with ties to Al-Qaida and Iran, and this appears to be most extravagant alleged plot revealed to date.

An oil-rich nation of 9 million people wedged between Russia and Iran, Azerbaijan has nurtured close relations with the United States and played an active role in Western-led counter-terrorist programs. That policy has placed a strain on its ties with Iran, which hosts a sizable ethnic Azeri community.

The statement Wednesday said other plots included plans for an assassination attempt on President Ilham Aliyev in April, as well as attacks on religious pilgrimage sites and police stations.

Officials said 40 people have been arrested. Weapons seized included 13 assault rifles, one machine gun, 12 handguns, three rifles, 3,400 rounds of bullets, 62 hand grenades, and several kilograms of explosives.

The statement provided no details on when the arrests took place.

"The armed group set itself the aim of mounting terrorist attacks in several regions of Azerbaijan, creating a mood of powerlessness and lawlessness, sowing panic, ethnic and religious enmity, disrupting the public peace and damaging Azerbaijan's international image," the statement said.

The Eurovision attack would have centered on the Baku Crystal Hall, where the singing competition concluded early Sunday, officials said. Other planned targets included Marriot and Hilton hotels in the capital, Baku.

At least one suspected plotter, 37-year-old Azerbaijani citizen Vugar Padarov, and a security agent were killed during raids to shut down the terrorist group, the statement said.

Padarov was identified in an April security statement as the leader of a group that had received religious training in Syria. Some of its members had weapons training with the Jihad Islami group in Pakistan and took part in fighting NATO-led troops in Afghanistan, the National Security Ministry said.

In March, the ministry announced the arrests of 22 Azerbaijani citizens it said had been hired by Iran to stage terror attacks against the U.S. and Israeli embassies as well as against western-linked groups and companies. It said they had been trained in Iran by the Revolutionary Guard.

Earlier this year, it announced the arrest of several other suspected terrorists allegedly working for Iran's secret services.

How To Make A Website In Under An Hour - Business, Design and ...

The popular consensus among new webmasters is that it requires a lot of hard work and long hours to create a website. While this may be true if you are designing a complex ecommerce website or developing a business site that needs to look as professional as possible, it is not the case if you are looking to create a simple informational website or blog. Using the steps outlined in this article will help you learn how to make a website in under an hour.

Buy Domain and Hosting Package

The first step you will need to take when looking to build a website is to purchase your domain name and hosting package. The domain name is what people will type into their web browser when trying to navigate to your site and the hosting package is server space for your website so that it appears on the Internet. If you are creating an online business or personal blog, try to come up with a catchy domain name so that your visitors have an easier time remembering your site. If you are creating a niche website, you will want to purchase a domain name that includes your site?s main keyword. This will help improve your SEO efforts when you start to promote your website to gain visitors.

Before you buy your domain name and hosting package, you will want to search the Internet for coupon codes that you can use when completing your purchase. Most domain registrars and hosting companies have discount coupon codes available online to help entice webmasters to purchase their products. Taking a few minutes to search the Internet to see if you can find a working coupon code can save you a decent amount of money when buying your domain and web hosting plan.

Install a Free CMS

Once you have bought your domain and hosting plan, you are ready to install a content management system on your server. There are several excellent free CMS programs available for you to use, so there is no reason why you should spend additional money on a content management system for your website. If you are not a very technical person, you may be able to have your web hosting provider install your CMS program for you. Some hosting packages offer a one click installation of the most popular free content management systems, making it extremely easy to get one of these programs installed on your web server.

Once your CMS is installed, you will want to look through all of the free themes offered through the CMS program. When you find a theme you enjoy, you can install it on your website and this will be the design and layout of your new website. No other web design is necessary as long as you are satisfied with the way the theme looks after it has been installed.

Outsource your Content

After you have installed a theme, you will need to post content to your website. A great way to quickly produce content for your site is to outsource your content writing to a freelance worker. If you already know what your website will be about, you can place an order for several articles with a freelance writer when you are buying your domain and waiting for your hosting package to be set up. By the time your hosting provider has your website ready to go and you have found a suitable theme for your site, you should receive your freshly written articles to post on your site. Outsourcing your content writing will save you a tremendous amount of time when creating a new website.

If you are looking to create a basic informational website or personal blog, it is possible to create one of these sites in under an hour. By using a free CMS program and installing one of the complimentary themes associated with the program and outsourcing your content writing, you can dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes to set up a new website.
