Butt-buzzing Cadillac is shaking up its image

Will a brand new model help boost Cadillac's slipping sales numbers? CNBC's Phil LeBeau reports on the key efforts General Motors has in place to revive Caddy sales.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com contributor

Cadillac is hoping to shake thing up ? quite literally ? with the launch of its new flagship sedan.?

Dubbed XTS, it?s equipped with a new ?Driver Awareness Package? that can spot a car hidden in the blind spot, sense when the driver is inadvertently slipping into the adjacent lane or if there?s a potential for a collision with the car ahead. Rather than flashing lights or sounding a buzzer, the sedan?s driver?s seat will begin to vibrate.

But Cadillac also intends to shake up the established order in the U.S. luxury market.?There was a time, not?many years ago, when the General Motors brand overwhelmingly dominated its competitors, both import and domestic.?Today, Cadillac is little more than a second-tier also-ran at home, and all but forgotten overseas.

?We intend to regain our mantle as the standard of the world,? said Don Butler, Cadillac?s vice president of marketing, during the first media drive of the new XTS, ?and we think we have the credentials to do it.?

The XTS effectively replaces two outgoing Caddy models, the STS and DTS.?But perhaps more importantly, it?s part of a wave of new products that the GM division promises to roll out in the coming years.?The big sedan goes up against the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.?The new ATS, which will launch a bit later this year, targets the like of the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4.

Butler broadly hints that Cadillac will move even more up-market in the not-too-distant future with a production version of the Ciel concept car that drew raves on the auto show circuit earlier this year. An updated prototype, according to sources, could be unveiled at next January?s Detroit Auto Show.

Even then, Cadillac officials admit, their line-up will still be relatively thin compared to competitors such as Mercedes.?The German maker now offers a score of coupes, sedans, convertibles, crossovers, sports cars and SUVs.

While Caddy doesn?t intend a one-for-one match, it is likely to continue rolling out at least one all-new model annually for the foreseeable future, GM CEO Dan Akerson announced during an appearance at the Beijing Motor Show in April.

?They?re still a work in progress,? said analyst Aaron Bragman, of IHS Automotive. ?But their share will grow simply by entering new segments.?

It?s not the first time Cadillac has hoped for a turnaround.?It began a much-ballyhooed ?renaissance? a decade ago with the launch of its first-generation CTS sedan.?That introduced the maker?s so-called Art & Science design theme, an edgy look that vaguely harkened back to such distinctive and dominant Cadillac offerings as the huge-finned ?59 Eldorado.

But a series of subsequent products, such as the short-lived XLR roadster, fell short of expectations, the revival all but running out of steam with the STS and DTS.?

Cadillac began to put things back on track with the launch of a second-generation CTS, especially when it pulled the wraps off the CTS Coupe, among the most distinctive offerings in today?s luxury car market.?And it beefed up its performance V-Series, the latest CTS-V one of the most powerful cars on the market.

The CTS will remain a centerpiece of the Cadillac line-up, though the next-generation sedan will grow slightly larger, to better position it between the compact ATS and full-size XTS.?Meanwhile, sources reveal that at least one more crossover-utility vehicle is in the works as a supplement to the current SRX model.

The SRX suggests Caddy could deliver some surprises.?The original version was largely ignored but the recent update is now challenging the long-time leader in the segment, the Lexus RX.

Like its competitors, meanwhile, Caddy is putting an increasing emphasis on technology, including not only the new Driver Awareness Package but also the Cadillac CUE system.?Unlike competitors? infotainment systems, CUE permits a motorist to give commands ? such as pairing a smartphone or entering a destination ? in plain English, rather than having to learn a complex hierarchy of rigid commands.

But commanding U.S. buyers back into the showroom is another matter entirely.?As recently as 1990, Cadillac routinely expected to sell a quarter-million vehicles annually.?Last year, that was down to barely 152,000, barely two-thirds the volume of key rivals like BMW, Lexus and Mercedes.?Worse, despite repeated efforts, Cadillac has largely failed to gain traction in the European market.

China is another story.?There, GM is itself the dominant maker and Cadillac is rapidly gaining ground. Analysts like Bragman believe it will do even better once it begins producing models like the XTS there later this year, sidestepping hefty import tariffs.?CEO Akerson told reporters during the Beijing show that his goal is boost Chinese Cadillac sales to 180,000 a year within a half-decade.

There was a time when Caddy defined the breed. The very name, Cadillac, showed up in the 1913 edition of Webster?s dictionary as the definition of the ultimate in perfection ? something the maker emphasized with a copy of the dictionary on display in Beijing.

While the term is still in use, it?s been a long time since Cadillac was seen as the pinnacle of the luxury car market. But not for lack of trying.? After its 2009 bankruptcy, GM is intent on regaining its broader global leadership and it needs Cadillac to be the simple of that resurrection.

Baby totes of the future are sling-stroller hybrids

6 hrs.

Toting infants and toddlers can be a hassle, especially when navigating stairs and crumbling sidewalks with the kangaroo-pouch-on-wheels known as the stroller.?

Thankfully, some parents of today and tomorrow who are taking classes between diaper changes and temper tantrums have come up with a solution: a sling-stroller hybrid that makes getting around a snap.

Together, a group of students from?MIT and the Rhode Island School of Design developed a?system that?is more sling than stroller. It looks similar to other infant carriers such as the Baby Bjorn and Ergobaby that parents wear on their chests, though with the ability to shift the precious package to one hip or the other while the free hand hoists the stroller for a jaunt up stairs or a across a busy street.

But, unlike other slings, the BuzzyBaby comes with a harness system that buckles onto the stroller to safely roll along the kiddo, giving the totee?s back and arms a rest until the next flight of stairs.

?The harness acts much like a universal remote control, providing one device to connect several,? notes The Boston Globe.?

The team came up with the idea after watching video tape of one of their members, Kin Lo, a fellow at the MIT?s Sloan School of Management, trying to navigate the stairs of a New York City subway with a stroller.?

According to market research performed by the?team, which included additional members from MIT and the Rhode Island School of Design, 77 percent of 400 mothers surveyed would find the system useful.

Apparently, this feedback is encouraging enough to turn the idea dreamed up in class into a business. The team plans to start selling their BuzzyBaby contraption in spring 2013.

Facts in scientific drug literature may not be

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? A growing concern with fraud and misconduct in published drug studies has led researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago's Center for Pharmacoeconomic Research to investigate the extent and reasons for retractions in the research.

"We were surprised to find the proportion of retractions due to scientific misconduct in the drug literature is higher than in general biomedical literature," said Simon Pickard, associate professor of pharmacy practice and senior author of a study published in the journal Pharmacotherapy.

Nearly three-quarters of the retracted drug studies were attributed to scientific misconduct, he said, "which includes data falsification or fabrication, questionable veracity, unethical author conduct, or plagiarism. While these studies comprise a small percentage of the overall literature, health care professionals may rely on this evidence to make treatment recommendations."

These studies can affect the treatment of thousands of patients, since scientific publications are often printed months in advance. There is an average lag in time of 39 months between the original publication and a retraction notice, Pickard said.

"Once a health care professional changes treatment options, it's not easy to reverse," said Jennifer Samp, a fellow in Pickard's research group and lead author of the study. "Staying current with new findings in scientific literature is a priority for health care practitioners -- especially pharmacists -- and it is important for them to know when a study has been retracted, especially those with manipulated data."

The UIC team found that a considerable number of the retracted papers were attributable to two authors, one based in Japan and the other in Germany.

Little attention was paid to the implications of scientific publication retractions until a 1998 review documented 235 instances from 1966 to 1997; 37 percent of the retractions were due to scientific misconduct.

Since the 1998 study, more interest has been given to retracted studies. In 2009, the Committee on Publication Ethics released the first set of guidelines to editors on issuing retractions.

"These guidelines should help to reduce the extent and impact of scientific misconduct," Pickard said. "Ironically, greater detection may give the impression that fraudulent science is on the rise, when it is actually being mitigated by these policies."

Glen Schumock, director of the UIC Center for Pharmacoeconomic Research, assisted Pickard and Samp in the study, which was funded by the UIC College of Pharmacy and Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A, Inc., which funded Samp's fellowship.

SPANISH FOOTBALL TEAM LIST | FINAL 23 PLAYERS FOR EURO 2012

SPANISH NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM Coach & Selector Vicente Del Bosque has handed in his final list of 23 players that will make up the 2012 EUROPEAN NATIONS CUP squad.

The National Selector had to make some harsh & difficult decisions as he incorporated the absent FC Barcelona & Athletic Club Bilbao Internationals which obviously could only come into the squad with departures. Some of the youngsters like De Gea & Isco returned home to incorporate themselves in the Spanish U-21 squad, but others will directly begin?their holidays & watch the Euro 2012 competition at home.

The big surprise was the NO inclusion of ADRIAN who starred yesterday?against?Serbia, ?& the absences of Roberto Soldado, both will be bitterly disappointed. In their place Del Bosque called up PEDRO ( FC Barcelona ) who put in a "blinder" in the Spanish Cup Final with two goals, plus FERNANDO TORRES remains which - in my case -?baffles?me as his season as been weak & is substitute with Chelsea FC.

The new "kid" in the squad is JUANFRAN ( Atletico de Madrid) who comes in after Iroala ( At.Bilbao) has a injury cloud over him which caused doubts. CESC FABREGAS is called up as well even though he is injured but with doctors optimistic of a speedy recovery.

Having said this, the decision of Del Bosque has to be respected & he not be saved from

?criticism as it is the "Spanish Sport" to criticise & remember?today's?decisions tomorrow if things go badly. It is clear that Del Bosque has put importance in the GROUP over individual talents & places faith in players that contributed to win European & World Cup titles.
The list of 23 players are as follows:

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Valdes & Reina

Defenders: Arbeloa, Juanfran, Ramos, Pique, Albiol, Javi Mart?nez & Jordi Alba

Midfielders: Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Cazorla, Mata, Silva & Cesc

Forwards: Navas, Pedro, Llorente, Torres & Negredo.

Research on Satellite Positioning and Call System Archive - IT ...

Abstract

With the development of science and technology, the area of people acting is enlarging gradually. In order to effectively improve the safety of people and equipment, especially for those engaging in the offshore fishing and field operations, an advanced satellite positioning and call system is designed in the paper. The main function of system is to obtain GPS data by the GPS module from the satellite, and then the information of location, time, speed and the situation of satellite online is displayed through the displaying terminal in real-time.Also the information will be uploaded to control center by satellite communications module after fixed time or fixed distance. At the same time the system should receive information and commands from control centre by satellite communications module. The weather forecast and news from control center are displayed. Under the dangerous situation, the latest location information is uploaded immediately to the control center by startup of the alarm button. This system can store a certain amount of historical information. The theory of GPS satellite positioning is introduced in detail in this paper. Besides a brief introduction of the principle of satellite communications, the ARM embedded systems and the invironment of ADS for hardware development are introduced in detail. On the basis of that, the paper describes how to realize the satellite positioning and call system in software and hardware. The core of control is AT91SRM7S64 in the design of the satellite positioning system of this paper. Classic HX-87 module is selected on GPS module. Satellite data communications is implemented by the Iridium SBD9601 module. The information is displayed by an intelligent terminal of serial port and 240 * 128 points. This paper supplies a practical way to design a set of satellite positioning and calls system . It is the first time that the module of Iridium system for communication is used for the satellite positioning and call system in our the country. The practical products are testing and the results are exciting.

Why Africa Needs a Study Bible

Even in a nation long saturated with Christian resources, Americans love their study Bibles. By juxtaposing the inspired text with informed commentary, readers quickly grow in their knowledge and depth of insight into God's Word. So imagine the good that could come from a study Bible produced by Africans for Africa, where 200 million Christians don't have a Bible at all.

Oasis International, which aims to establish a Christian book industry across Africa, has assembled an 11-person editorial team leading hundreds of contributors across the continent to produce the Africa Study Bible. To learn more about this exciting project I corresponded with Oasis president and Africa Study Bible project manager Matthew Elliott, who has been working for more than 15 years to supply books and Bibles to Africa's poor majority. Elliott earned his PhD in New Testament from the University of Aberdeen and has written two books, Feel: The Power of Listening to Your Heart and Faithful Feelings: Rethinking Emotion in the New Testament. He explained how the study Bible idea originated, how they selected the contributors, and how we can help.?

How did this idea come together?

As early as 2002, we were talking about ways to make the Bible come alive for African readers. In Jos, Nigeria, one of our partners did a study for English-speaking Christians on how they understood the language of the Bible. Many millions across the continent go to school in English. We found that many words familiar to us in the United States are not so clear to the average African. We began thinking and dreaming of ways to increase understanding of the Bible. Then in 2010 I spent about two months traveling Africa asking questions of pastors, denominational presidents and bishops, and seminary residents. Is this a good idea? If so, what does this look like? What are the features and topics that will grow Christians deep in Africa? Every single conversation ended something like this: "Africa needs this Bible, what can I do to help?" We had a green light to stop dreaming and start working on the project.

Help us understand the need for an Africa study Bible and how it would contrast with the many study Bibles produced in the West.

We just received an article on "God's People in Transition." It starts like this:

The sun was rising when the first gunshot and bombardment were heard in the town of Dolisie. Everyone tried to find shelter or get to safety amid the cries of children, wailing, shouts, and heavy bombardments. War had come to our town, and we did not know what to do. After two days of trying to hide in our house we were driven out by lack of food and an encounter with angry and greedy soldiers.

It goes on to talk about the biblical basis for taking care of refugees. Our author has lived it. AIDS orphans, female circumcision, slavery---these are just some of the most obvious examples of the African context that would never appear in an application targeted to readers in America. This study Bible will equip Africans to live out the gospel in their context, to be disciples of Jesus.

The ASB will also capture the wonders and blessings of the African church and culture, their spirit of celebration, community, and faith. In many ways, African culture is closer to that of the Bible than ours. Africans understand things we cannot see. The ASB will bring African insights about the Scripture to the world as well.

Every feature has one simple purpose---growing disciples deep in the African context.

How did you select the various contributors?

Our editorial committee came to Accra, Ghana, from every major region and language group---English, French, Arabic, Portuguese (the Bible will be published in multiple languages). They set the direction for the project and made every major editorial decision. It was probably the most amazing week of my working life, to see these men and women come together from all these different denominations and cultures and have such unity of purpose and vision. All were highly educated, having a doctorate in one field or another; a number were seminary presidents or denominations presidents. One man was the president of an association representing probably 50 million African Christians. Most had never met each other. Can you imagine a greater possibility for conflict and disagreement? Yet all were strong believers in the authority and power of the Bible. From the first moment, we were on task and working as true brothers and sisters in Christ.

They had a pastor's heart to grow the church in every discussion. Our editors, directed by John Jusu from African International University (formerly NEGST), are now working with hundreds of writers across the continent to see their vision accomplished.

Previous African theological projects have been criticized for essentially offering the same Western perspective, since so many African leaders were educated in the West. Are you concerned with that critique on the Africa Study Bible?

Great question. That was a topic in about every conversation in my travels in 2010, and many, many conversations since. I wish you could see the notes coming in to see the results. We have designed whole feature criteria to set an authentic African tone for the project. In the stories and proverbs, writers are comparing their sayings and stories with the truth of Scripture. What wise sayings fit the truth of the Bible, and which ones contradict biblical truth and need to be changed or modified? In another feature, authors are working to draw parallels between passages of Scripture and practices in a part of African culture. I think the ASB may set a new precedent for this kind of project. That is our hope, anyway. All this is being run through a very strong filter of historical, biblical, orthodox Christianity. We have defined a very rigorous, African-led review process that will ensure this outcome. So the final result should be strong in both sound theology and cultural context.

How can readers participate in and support this project?

They can go online to www.africastudybible.com, give, and post a dedication or encouragement for our writers. That is a start. However, it is a $500,000 project just for the editorial process, and additional funds are needed for translation and to start printing Bibles. Our hope is that the ASB will affect many millions in the years to come. Many of these African Christians---even pastors---do not have a single book to equip their spiritual growth. The Africa Study Bible will be one volume that has the words of Scripture, defines the basic truths of Christianity, and teaches them to apply it in their lives. If they can own one single book to grow their faith, this should be it.

We need churches and other groups to come alongside the project as well. We have defined the cost of every book of the Bible. A congregation can give by underwriting the Gospel of Mark, or maybe a smaller group wold like to raise the funds for Jude---we all can do something. The editorial cost and printing the first 200,000 copies will cost about $50 per verse.

Last, pray for us! Africa is a place of intense spiritual warfare. The church is growing so quickly, but can you imagine a continent where more than 200 million Christians do not have a Bible, where many if not most pastors have two, three, or more churches to oversee? How do you learn what it means to be a Christian? What does the church become in this context? What kind of false teachings can arise when people do not have a way to learn what the Bible is really saying? Pray with us that God supplies the resources to complete the Africa Study Bible so it can be a tool to grow believers deep!

India rejects Siachen demilitarisation

NEW DELHI - Indian Chief of the Army staff Gen VK Singh has said that General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani's remarks on Siachen's demilitarisation could not be taken seriously.
Last month, Kayani had told media that both Pakistan and India should talk about pulling out troops from the region and spend more on the development and prosperity of their people. However, he made it clear that it should not be taken as Pakistan's weakness. In an interview to Times Now, the Indian general rejected Kayani?s proposal to demilitarise the Siachen Glacier. "These are all gimmicks that keep coming from the establishment in Pakistan and we will be fools if we fall for them," Singh maintained.
"Today you are sitting in dominating heights which cannot be given away. I am sorry. Who is going to look after them? Today, your infrastructure is pretty well advanced. We are perfectly okay up there," Singh said.
The Indian army chief also criticized ?The Indian Express? report of April 4 about how troop movements near the capital on the night of January 16 - the day General Singh moved the Supreme Court - rang alarm bells in the highest levels of the government. He described the news item as part of an ?agenda? and said the newspaper's Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta, who was one of the authors of the report, had met him over lunch and asked him ?questions? about the troop movements.
When asked if this conversation was on the record, Singh said Gupta was not recording the discussion, but he was quite sure no journalist in the world had ever been off the record." His response was ?No?, while answering a question whether his ?side of the story? was taken. Sindh alleged that someone in the government leaked his confidential letter to the prime minister on glaring weaknesses in defence preparedness.
When asked how it was done, Singh said neither he nor anyone close to him was the source of the leak. "In army, we don't do things like this. It is not our culture. Let us find out who leaked it," he said. When asked if somebody within the government or outside leaked the letter, he replied: "Has to be within the government, who will be outside?" Interestingly, just three days before his retirement, Singh also regretted moving Supreme Court on his date of birth issue, but questioned the manner in which the highest court of the land, and a judge on the bench, treated his petition.

Pebble Blue Samsung Galaxy S III reportedly pushed back for some launches

Samsung Galaxy S III Pebble Blue

We hope you weren't too excited about getting a Pebble Blue-tinged Galaxy S III in May, because we're seeing unconfirmed reports that the darker Hyperglazed hue might not be available for everyone in the first round of launches. Some would-be customers, primarily in Nordic countries but also in Asia-Pacific, Europe and Persian Gulf states, have been told that only the Marble White color will be on shelves at first. Most of the consensus, based on retailer notices, is that demand for blue is straining supply. Samsung Benelux's press lead Vivian Peters told Tweakers.net that at least the Netherlands wouldn't be getting the stealthier color until early June, but didn't confirm a rumor that there had been flaws in the blue plastic backplates that might have triggered shortages. There hasn't been mention of problems for the heavily-hyped UK launch.

We reached out to a Samsung spokesman ourselves and were told only that the company "does not comment on rumors or speculation" -- a slightly unusual statement given what Peters said on the record, but it does lead us to take at least the more dire claims with a grain of salt.

Pebble Blue Samsung Galaxy S III reportedly pushed back for some launches originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 May 2012 19:07:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

parrot-drone-2There are plenty of ways to get your flight school kicks with your smartphone or tablet ? this missile shooting Griffin chopper comes to mind ? but few manage to ooze as much style (or cost as much money) as Parrot?s AR.Drone 2.0. Getting the thing ready to fly is surprisingly simple. Once you?ve popped the battery into place, and turned the thing on, the Drone creates its own Wi-Fi network that the control device connects to. From there, just fire up the FreeFlight app on your iOS or Android device and you?re off to the races.

UK appointed pro-Murdoch minister to News Corp bid

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron gave the job of ruling on a multi-billion dollar takeover by News Corp to a minister he knew supported the deal, an inquiry heard on Thursday, reigniting accusations he was in hock to Rupert Murdoch.

Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary who was handed the task of deciding whether to support Murdoch's $12 billion bid for BSkyB, had previously sent a memo to Cameron detailing his view that the takeover would be good for Britain.

Critics say Cameron was far too close to figures at Murdoch's British newspaper arm News International and assiduously courted them in his drive to become Prime Minister.

He has since been embarrassed by a series of revelations shedding light on the close ties, including the details of weekend gatherings with Murdoch family members and executives at their respective country homes.

However, the suggestion of impropriety over the BSkyB deal, which required the government to take an independent, quasi-judicial stance, could be even more damaging and piles more pressure on an already embattled Hunt.

"The Prime Minister should never have given him the job," said Harriet Harman, deputy leader of the opposition Labour party. "It is clear that Jeremy Hunt was not the impartial arbiter he was required to be, and he should already have resigned."

The takeover has become a key issue in the long-running controversy in Britain over whether Murdoch and his newspaper executives have undue influence over government, in part because the tabloids can be used to make or break a political career.

Murdoch eventually had to ditch the planned takeover amid public outcry over phone-hacking by journalists at his Sunday tabloid, the News of the World.

LATEST CHARACTERS

The latest characters to be dragged in to the row are Adam Smith, a fresh-faced aide to Hunt and Fred Michel, a News Corp lobbyist, who between them exchanged hundreds of texts, phone calls and emails as Hunt weighed whether to approve the deal.

Giving evidence to a press ethics inquiry called as a result of the phone-hacking scandal, Smith, 30, denied that Hunt had been a "cheerleader" for News Corp's bid.

Cameron gave Hunt oversight of the process in December 2010 after another minister who held the task was secretly recorded by a newspaper as saying he had "declared war" on Murdoch.

In a draft memo sent to Cameron just a month earlier, Hunt said opponents to the takeover should be ignored and that Murdoch's son James, the former chairman of BSkyB, was angry the matter had been referred to regulators.

"The UK has the chance to lead the way but if we block it our media sector will suffer for years," the memo said. "We must be very careful that any attempt to block it is done on genuine plurality grounds and not as a result of lobbying by competitors.

"I think it would be totally wrong to cave in to the (BBC chief) Mark Thompson, Channel 4, Guardian (newspaper) line that this represents a substantial change of control given that we all know Sky is controlled by News Corp anyway."

FINER POINTS

Cameron's office said his note was consistent with public comments he had made at the time and that the prime minister had not tried to influence the process in any way.

"The questions that follow are rather more serious on the face of it for Cameron than they are for Hunt," said Steve Hewlett, a media consultant who has watched the inquiry closely.

However, he noted it would have been difficult to find any minister who did not have an opinion on the deal at that time.

Under questioning, the 30-year-old Smith, who rose quickly to a senior government role during his career working for Cameron's Conservative Party, did not appear to appreciate what a quasi-judicial role meant, an important issue for a deal that was market sensitive.

The market cap of BSkyB, Britain's dominant pay-TV firm, rose by more than 2 billion pounds between December 2010 and when the bid fell apart in July 2011.

Despite being in regular contact with Michel, Smith said he had no contacts with those who were against Murdoch's bid and told the inquiry he did not believe this was a problem.

"Nobody ever said where did you hear this or you shouldn't be doing that. I don't think anybody was surprised that that was the role (I had)," he said.

Asked if he had backed the takeover, he said: "Very broadly. I didn't, to be honest with you, particularly mind either way whether it happened or not. In a funny sort of way I couldn't quite see why everyone was getting quite so worked up."

Revelations last month about the extent and nature of the contacts between News Corp and Smith sparked vociferous calls for Hunt to resign, although he described as laughable the accusation that he had given News Corp special treatment.

However, asked about the issue on Thursday, Cameron's spokesman repeatedly dodged questions on whether Hunt could have misled parliament during a statement he gave about his contacts with News Corp.

"He is soon to appear before the Leveson inquiry and he will provide answers to all of these questions," the spokesman said.

It may lack the poetry of ?the Eagle has landed,? but here?s major space news: the Dragon has docked.

The Dragon capsule, built by dot-com magnate Elon Musk?s company SpaceX, is the first commercial spacecraft to visit the International Space Station. It left Earth Tuesday. ?And launch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, as NASA turns to the private sector to resupply the International Space Station."

All previous resupply flights have been operated by national space agencies such as NASA. The Dragon?s flight was meant to demonstrate the capsule?s capabilities, and the spacecraft had to pass a series of tests on the way to the station before NASA cleared it for approach.

On Friday, May 25th, astronauts aboard the ISS used a robotic arm to grab the free-floating Dragon capsule and hauled it in for docking. By 12:02pm, the spacecraft was firmly attached to the station.

Under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA, SpaceX plans to make 12 cargo runs to the station in the coming years. And someday the Dragon capsule could carry not just cargo but astronauts. Says Musk, ?It's the dawn of a new era of space exploration.?

Are you Physically Active? No Time Like the Present to Start ...

With the weather getting warmer and Memorial Day weekend ? the unofficial start to summer ? soon upon us, what better time to make a commitment to physical fitness? How fitting then, that May is both National Physical Fitness and Sport Month and Exercise is Medicine Month! BlazeSports invites you to join us in making a commitment to physical activity this month and throughout the summer.

All individuals need health care and a good health regimen to stay well and actively participate in the community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are many health implications for being overweight. Among the increased risks are: greater risk of hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, some cancers, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, asthma, and other respiratory problems. For an individual with a disability, understanding how to prevent illness and manage these secondary health conditions is an important part of healthy living.

Physical activity at all ages reduces risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Physically active children, including children with disabilities, are more likely to thrive academically and socially. Physically active children also learn how to incorporate safe and healthy activities into their lives. For adults, physical activity can reduce the risks of secondary health conditions and pain as well as depression.

In 2008 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans to provide information and guidance on the types and amounts of physical activity that provide substantial health benefits for all Americans aged 6 years and older. The report recognizes that one of the most important steps any individual can take to achieve better health is becoming physically active. If you aren?t familiar with the guidelines, we encourage you to use this month?s designation as an impetus to get in the game!

Key Guidelines for Individuals with Disabilities:
? Adults with disabilities, who are able to, should get at least 150 minutes per week (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate intensity, or 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) per week of vigorous intensity aerobic activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous intensity aerobic activity. Aerobic activity should be performed in episodes of at least 10 minutes, and preferably, it should be spread throughout the week.
? Adults with disabilities, who are able to, should also do muscle strengthening activities of moderate or high intensity that involve all major muscle groups on 2 or more days per week as these activities provide additional health benefits.
? Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity daily. Most of the 60 or more minutes a day should be either moderate or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity, and should include vigorous intensity physical activity at least 3 days a week. Children and adolescents should include muscle strengthening physical activity and bone strengthening physical activity at least 3 days a week.
? When individuals with disabilities are not able to meet the above Guidelines, they should engage in regular physical activity according to their abilities and should avoid inactivity.
? All individuals should consult their healthcare provider about the amounts and types of physical activity that are
appropriate for their abilities.

How Precious Is Food? ? Whitelaw

There is a restaurant review by Pete Wells in the New York Times Dining Section dated May 23, 2012. It is a review of the highly regarded and very expensive seafood restaurant, Le Bernardin. I love food, and I don?t mean to pick on either Mr. Wells or Le Bernardin. I am sure it is great, and as a once in a lifetime treat or celebration perhaps there is justification. It also exists for those with expense accounts, or who have the financial ability to ignore the price.

What struck me as somewhat funny when I read the article was the following:

?A few are flat-out luxurious, like a small boulder of caviar nested inside a heap of sea urchin on a carpet of little gnocchi. I blinked my eyes a few times at the $70 supplement on top of the $125 set price for four courses at dinner. Then I decided not to worry, because a chance like this might not come along again. A year from now the sea urchin and caviar, along with almost everything else on a menu of nearly 40 items, may have made way for a new crop of thrills.?

Then again a year from now Mr. Wells might not be a reviewer for the NY Times on an expense account and actually may have to pay the freight at the restaurant. Clearly, Mr. Wells needs to do this for his job and he recognizes the extraordinary costs of eating at this restaurant. Nonetheless, I could not help thinking about my post about UNICEF?s Tap Project, which raises money so that children could have water to drink. If $1 provides a child with 40 days of clean drinking water, then the $70 supplement would have provided 2800 days of clean drinking water: over 7 and half years in just a few bites. My mouth gets dry, not watery just thinking about it.

Everyone should enjoy themselves and can splurge. I am sure Le Bernardin does a lot of good social work, so maybe they can contribute to a good cause the profit that they make on this food item.

I would also like to know if Mr. Wells could recommend a good carpet cleaner for the ?carpet of little gnocchi?. They are so hard to find these days. Neither food, nor food reviews, need to be so precious.

Azerbaijan basks in glitz, fears exposure

(AP) ? On a recent evening on Baku's seaside promenade, throbbing Euro-dance music blared out from an open-air concert as families strolled by. Cafes serving fragrant skewered meat served throngs of locals and foreigners.

The capital of this former Soviet republic has shed its dour, industrial image and evolved into a vibrant metropolis combining the old world charms of Istanbul with the architectural ostentations of Dubai. Now it has the perfect stage to show off its decade-long transformation: the Eurovision Song contest.

The extravaganza is viewed by some 125 million people worldwide. Now in its 57th year, it's an epic battle of plastic pop pitting performers from 42 nations against one another. Musically, it's a global laughingstock (that's part of the charm) ? but for host countries, the event can serve as a valuable PR platform. To authorities, the contest also risks exposing what critics say is rampant repression and cronyism.

The finals ? in which British crooner Engelbert Humperdinck is touted as a hot favorite ? are held Saturday in the new $134 million Crystal Palace concert hall on a point jutting out into the Caspian Sea.

As darkness falls, Baku's entire skyline turns into a glaring, electric testament to profligacy and confidence. The city's renovated Art Nouveau and Islamic-era architecture increasingly competes for attention with constructions like the wavy, glass-fronted Flame Towers complex, whose three skyscrapers light up at night in a playful LED display.

The upscale restaurants and exclusive designer boutiques hint at a burgeoning moneyed elite riding high on the riches generated by the two decade-long oil boom.

While the country grows ever richer, many in Azerbaijan, a nation of some 9 million Turkic language-speaking people, are once more embracing their Islamic heritage, which was suppressed during Soviet times. Headscarves are an increasingly common sight, and a ban on their use in schools announced in 2010 drew sharp public protests.

As Islam flourishes, however, rights activists also say that blatant trampling of democratic freedoms is being ignored by Western powers eager to exploit Azerbaijani oil wealth. Advocacy groups are using the global attention generated by Eurovision to publicize rights issues they say have been overlooked for years.

"Both local rights activists and international human rights groups view this as an opportunity to highlight to the world just what is going on in Azerbaijan, which doesn't normally receive a lot of press coverage," said Max Tucker, Azerbaijan campaigner for Amnesty International.

For the West, Azerbaijan has long been mainly about oil.

The nation has been drawing in foreign prospectors, including many Americans, since as far back as the final decades of the 19th century. The country is a geographic minnow compared with neighbors Iran, Russia and Turkey, but its location and natural resources give it an outsized role in history.

Within six decades of the construction of the first modern wells in the 1840s and subsequent investment by foreign tycoons like the Nobels and the Rothschilds, Baku accounted for more than half of oil production worldwide.

That early energy boom withered during the Soviet interlude, but resumed again in the post-independence 1990s.

While there is disagreement on exactly how much oil the country has, the general consensus is that proven reserves lie somewhere north of 7 billion barrels.

On top of that, Azerbaijan is also estimated to sit above around 850 billion cubic meters (30 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas.

BP has loomed largest among the international energy majors. The company has a 34 percent stake in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli oil field off the Caspian Sea shore. The reserve is so massive, geologists initially believed it to consist of three separate fields.

Other big players that have partnered up with national oil company SOCAR include U.S. majors Chevron and ExxonMobil, Norway's Statoil, and Turkiye Petrolleri.

Azerbaijan's calibrated ambivalence toward U.S. geopolitical antagonists Russia and Iran have made it a particularly appealing source of energy to the West.

Tensions with Iran have deepened in recent months over Azerbaijani suspicions that Tehran supports radical religious extremists in its midst.

Relations with Russia are cordial but undermined by what Baku perceives as Moscow's support for neighboring Armenia, with which Azerbaijan fought and lost a bitter six-year conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory from 1988.

The West's cozy relations with Azerbaijan have drawn vehement criticism from rights activists, who maintain that economic interests have trumped concerns over democracy.

The U.S. State Department's own 2010 human rights reports speaks of limitations on freedom of expression and assembly, impediments to political activities and a flawed election that secured a new term for President Ilham Aliyev in 2008. After changes to the law in 2009, Aliyev, who inherited power from his late father in 2003 in a move that many have described as a monarchic-style handover, will be permitted to run for office indefinitely.

Journalists who have bucked the trend by reporting on alleged corruption in government have often faced repercussions.

In a prominent recent case, investigative reporter Khadija Ismayilova received an envelope stuffed with intimate photographs that she was made to understand would be made public if she didn't stop her aggressive reporting. Instead of backing down, Ismayilova went public with the blackmail threat. Covertly filmed footage of her at home was posted online days later.

Undeterred, Ismayilova has since reported for Radio Free Europe about how Aliyev's family has allegedly profited from the construction of the newly built concert hall in which the Eurovision contest is to be held.

Several small Arab Spring-inspired political rallies have been broken up violently by police over the last year. People linked with the meetings have ended up behind bars for lengthy sentences on unrelated charges or been enrolled into military service, despite being exempt. Similar attempts to hold anti-government rallies ahead of the Eurovision finals have also been robustly shut down.

As is typical in other energy-rich authoritarian post-Soviet states, Azerbaijan's government has sought to mitigate criticism of its poor democratic record by pointing to economic achievements.

Rapid economic growth has created a class of new super-rich. But it has also cut the number of people mired in poverty fivefold over the past eight years to around 7.6 percent of the population, according to government figures released in January.

Those figures are roughly in line with World Bank data.

Still, beyond the fringes of Baku, life is notably harder. Average monthly salaries stand around $450, which explains why the giant SUVs that jam the city's smooth, broad streets are not often seen elsewhere.

Economic experts warn that as the end of the peak of the frenzied oil boom beckons, Azerbaijan will need to adopt a less state-dominated model. But many worry that market proponents are being thwarted by political hardliners.

International coverage of democracy concerns has been met with unvarnished scorn by Azerbaijani authorities, who say Azerbaijan is the victim of a smear campaign by international rights groups.

"We are a democratic country," presidential spokesman Ali Hasanov said this week. "We are located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe. We could remain in Asia, but we have chosen the way of European development."

This is the way we all can manage our bottom line and maintain an ample profit margin. As a business owner you probably already know and understand this fact and are exersizing every opportunity to save where you can on anything you can.Not to mention the cost of marketing your company or business to prospective clinets. There are many different ways by which this is done and internet marketing via a web site solely purposed for this task can be an excellent way to do just that.

One can procure the services of some of the cheapest web hosting firms out there and use the hosting packages they offer to launch web sites for this purpose alone. Marketing your products or services directly to the demographic you wish to reach in your niche and providing you with a greatly increased and more powerful business profile in your market. This is one of the best ways to get the attention of your potential clients and possibly even grow your clientele base through the use of internet marketing.

This is quickly becoming one of the most competitive advertising and marketing arenas today. An ever growing ocean we know as the internet with a rapidly increasing number of sharks waiting to gobble up the less aggressive businesses out there. The businesses with a less than successful marketing strategy being the small fish that chum the waters for the larger predators to swallow whole. This is what drives home the importance of a solid internet marketing campaign to help grow your client base for the benefit of your business. This will be an investment from which you will quickly see a return in regards to your companies popularity and overall notoriety in you respective fields. So while we all scrimp and save on utilities some of us forget that our web hosts can be quite costly as well.

This is why a cheap business website hosting account is so very important to your monthly income and your bottom line. You will be able to market your businesses many facets without having to take out a second mortgage on your home in order to make highly costly television ads that will more than likely be missed by your potential clients as they fast forward through the commercials on their favorite recorded television shows.

So if you have been thinking about finding a new avenue of marketing your business great or small, internet based marketing and advertising are the best way to do just that. Taking advantage of this vastly infinite network of computers and end users to market and advertise any and every little aspect of your company that potential clients might find appealing. This will greatly increase the number of clients visiting your web sites because they can find the information they need with ease.

Primarily due to a well built and maintained web site chock full of pertinent information intrinsic to your line of business or trade. This will in turn boost the sales of your products and services due to the expanded reach that the internet provides you with. This is where a highly aggressive internet marketing campaign will benefit you and your clients the most. The reality is that the more people use your products or services the more you can afford to discount your rates. As we all know when we save money on something we are much happier customers, and much happier customers leads to the expansion and growth of your business and its popularity in your niche.

bethpontiff - Vibrant Designs: Home Based Handmade Business ...

First of all, I am in NO WAY a professional, so please don't take what I say as anything more than another owner of a?home based business sharing what she's learned!? Back in March, I did a feature on my Heidi Bag for Gigispetals, a great feature website who is closing down soon.? I learned so so so much in doing that feature!? I had to come up with a good way to package my product in a manner that was pleasing to the eye, branded my business, and was economical for me!? This is not easy!?

There are many different ways to package a product.? There are also a ton of different things to keep in mind when trying to settle on a way to package your product.

Some things I tried to keep in mind were:
product size
cost of packaging
looks of the overall package

For the time being, here is what I have decided on when packaging my larger products:

In choosing the cellophane bag, I am allowing my product to speak for itself.? If your product looks good, then the packaging looks good!? I simply fold the top of the bag over once and close it with a VD sticker.

For my jewelry items, I prefer to use a drawstring organza bag, but sometimes I have to settle for a jewelry size ziplock bag.? The packaged item then nestles into a bed of tissue paper for cushion inside it's shipping box.?

To help aid in costs as well as staying "green", I also do my best to reuse boxes!? My old job frequently gets boxes and they know to save them for me :)

So, what about you?? What's your favorite way to package your products?? I am always on the lookout for more ideas so please, email me a photograph of your packaged product or comment here with what you do.?

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Yahoo seeks to shake up search, Web browsing

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo is joining the battle to redefine Internet search and taking aim at building a better Web browser, too.

The troubled Internet company' is taking its shot with a tool called "Axis" that alters browsers made by other companies so search results can be displayed in a more convenient and compelling format.

Yahoo Inc. is releasing Axis in Apple's app store late Wednesday. It also can be installed as a plug-in on most major browsers used on desktop computers and laptops.

Browsers running Axis can display search results in a panorama of visual thumbnails that can be scrolled through above a Web page. It's a departure from search engines' traditional presentation of a list of staid Web links that require more navigation and guesswork.
