Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift: Total BFF Alert!
To borrow a line from a certain supermarket tabloid: Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift, they're just like us!
Earlier this week, the singing superstars took a break from touring and recording to simply hang out like a couple of regular pals. They played guitar, they baked cupcakes and they shared their day with fans on Instagram:
"Because you need a best friend [that] sings beautifully, another best friend to dance with you and another to listen," Gomez wrote along with the photos. "Oh and cupcakes. . .Cupcakes!"
Last year, Selena shared a story with Ryan Seacrest about how Swift showed up at her house with junk food and made her feel better about a big break-up.
"I feel very lucky to have her in my life," Selena said of Taylor.
While she and her famous BFF were chilling, meanwhile, boyfriend Justin Bieber was overseas talking about his penis.

UFC VP says Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey helped bolster MMA?s hopes in New York
If, as it should be, mixed martial arts is ever legalized in New York, don't forget to give Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey her share of credit.
On April 18 in Albany, N.Y., the New York state senate voted 43-14 to approve a bill that would legalize and regulate MMA in the state. It still needs the pass the assembly and then be signed by Gov. Cuomo in order to become law.
The bill has passed the state senate before, but this time around, said Marc Ratner, the UFC's vice president for governmental and regulatory affairs, the job was made much easier with Rousey's testimony.
"She got up there and she really made a great presentation and I think she had a significant impact," Ratner said. "We [as executives] can talk all we want to them about the positives of MMA, but to hear it from someone like her, a fighter, someone who is very articulate [and] who made her points very passionately, it definitely made a huge impact."
Rousey, who defeated Miesha Tate by, what else, an arm bar submission to win the title on March 3 in Columbus, was particularly effective when she spoke about what MMA has done for her. She won a bronze medal in judo in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but said she would be struggling financially had she remained in that sport. She said she'd be losing money if she were a professional judoka.
Several senators approached her, she said, and told her her presentation changed their minds and caused them to vote in favor of the bill.
"MMA has a bad rap among some people," Rousey told Cagewriter. "It's marketed sometimes in a way that is not what the sport is. You hear the marketing, 'Two men enter. One man leaves,' but that's ridiculous. It's not what this sport is. They just do it to sound dramatic. It's like a movie preview. The whole movie isn't just running around and screaming and explosions, but they make it seem like that [in the trailer] so people go to the movie. There's a lot of quiet time and dialogue and there is a plot. What they're doing is like they're comparing a commercial for 'The Bourne Identity' to actually sitting there and watching it for two hours."
She spent time explaining the nuances of her specialty, the arm bar. She pointed out that she'd be arm barred "more times than I can count," and pointed out that she wasn't out snapping bones. She said she doesn't think she's ever broken an opponent's arm.
That, too, worked.
"I explained everything behind it and after I did, they were like, 'OK, that's no problem, it's not barbaric,' " Rousey said.
Her best point, though, may have been when she told the senators that there was actually already MMA going on in the state. She made them aware that there is a robust amateur scene there, but it isn't as safe for the fighters and the fighters aren't able to make a living, like they do when they're professionals and compete where the sport is regulated.
That point struck home with many of the lawmakers.
"In New York, you could fight and have people do MMA," she said. "But they have to do it without the proper medical checks. They have to do it without getting paid. They have to do it without any kind of regulation or oversight. [Amateur MMA in New York] is unsafe the way it is now, because they're missing all the things we have in pro MMA.
"We're not asking them to bring in a bunch of people and tell them to kill each other. That's not what's going on. That's how it was being presented. I wanted to point out that amateur MMA is here already, but we want to get it regulated so it's safe and there is regulation and it is safe and everyone gets paid for what they do. I want to be able to work in any state in my own country. Can you imagine, we're in 2012 and I still legally can't do my job anywhere I want in my country?"
The tens of millions of dollars poured into the legalization effort by UFC owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta and president Dana White will be primarily responsible for MMA's passage in New York, if and when it occurs.
But Rousey's day on the hill shouldn't be forgotten. On that day, the lady was a champ when it came to wooing the legislators.

Mel Gibson: What I?ll tell my Jewish son about anti-semitic remarks
Mel Gibson is involved in another dustup over alleged anti-semitic remarks, and a Jewish mom contemplates how she'll talk to her son about hatred.
?You Jewish son of a *****,? a boy taunted my brother on the school bus one day as I sat nearby.
Skip to next paragraph Linda K. WertheimerGuest blogger
Linda K. Wertheimer, The Boston Globe?s former education editor, writes about religion, education, and family for various publications and blogs at Jewish Muse, A Writer's Blog on Faith and Family. She is a late bloomer:? In her early 40s, she celebrated her adult bat mitzvah, married, and had a son ? in that order.
Recent posts
I was 14, my brother, Kevin, 16. The comment made us seethe, but we let it pass. Then a few weeks later, my family, the only Jewish one in our neighborhood and rural Ohio school, woke up to find swastikas etched in wax on our home windows and cars.
This time, my family did not let it pass. My parents contacted a deputy sheriff, who was friends with my brother through?Boy Scouts. The deputy sheriff went to the doors of the boys we thought were responsible. None admitted to the anti-Semitic act. My family could have told our school, but did not. This was in the late 1970s before it was popular for schools and parents to directly confront anti-Semitism, racism, and other acts of intolerance.
Now a parent, I read about Mel Gibson?s latest insensitive comment about Jews and wonder how to help my son cope with anti-Semitism and prejudice better than I did during my childhood. Mr. Gibson, according to several news reports, quipped, ?Funny, you don?t look Jewish,? in response to a script co-writer?s comment that he was Jewish. Gibson also is in hot water with another Jewish screenwriter for an angry rant that allegedly included anti-Semitic remarks.
I?m heartened that the media is not simply letting Gibson getting away with making offhand comments about Jews.
My 4-year-old son, frankly, would not understand any of this. But at some point in life, he will hear a comment that maligns Jews and wonder why people hate him so. The slur may come from a famous person or worse, from someone he knows.
I do not criticize my parents for not reporting the swastika incident to my school. Our school, at least from the 1970s into the early 1980s, showed little interest in teaching students the importance of respecting all religions. Instead, the school forced religion upon us, through pastors who preached at Easter and Christmas assemblies and through Bible study classes once a week in elementary school.
After our house was covered with swastikas, I was angry and ashamed, ashamed somewhat that I was Jewish, ashamed that I did not know how to fight back against such ignorance. For I think the boy who taunted my brother and the boys who likely put swastikas on our house were more ignorant than anti-Semitic. Gibson, an actor I admittedly adored during his Lethal Weapon days, may be a combination of both.
I look at my son and want to protect him from hearing anything derogatory about his religion, but know I cannot. How should he respond to a direct insult about his faith? Do not shout back, I will urge him as he grows older. But do not take it in silence, either. He should tell the person that it is wrong to malign someone else?s faith that way. If the person brushes him off, he should tell an adult. He should always tell me and his father.
If I sense, as a parent, that some of his peers are not tolerant of other faiths or races, I plan to act to educate rather than focus only on my son. So many resources exist now that did not during my childhood. We can teach our children by showing the 2004 documentary, Paper Clips. Eighth-graders at a rural school in Tennessee collected paper clips for each of the 6 million people killed in the Holocaust. They also created a museum about the Holocaust.
Last night was Yom Hashoah, the international Holocaust Memorial Day. I sang as part of a chorus in a concert at Temple Emunah in Lexington, a Boston suburb. Guest speakers came from Facing History and Ourselves, a course used in schools internationally to teach children how to fight prejudice with compassion. The students learn about the Holocaust and other examples of genocide. They watch videos like one the temple congregation was shown last night ? "The Power of Good" ? about Nicholas Winton, who saved hundreds of Jewish children from the Nazis.
It may be too late for Gibson to reverse many Jews? opinion of him. It?s never too late to teach our children well.
Last night, a soloist sang author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel?s words:
?The opposite of love is not hate, it?s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it?s indifference.? The words haunted and comforted me. How much I want to teach my child not to be indifferent. How much I want to make sure that I never stay silent when I must speak.

NimbleTV streams cable content to 'any' device, launching 'in the next few months'
With services like Aereo TV taking a similar streaming approach -- and getting sued in the process -- NimbleTV won't have an easy road ahead, but the outfit's willing to take its chances. The startup plans to launch its subscription-based offering to the public within the next few months, allowing future users to stream cable content to unspecified devices at any time and from anywhere on the globe -- all thanks to Nimble's cloud-based software. However, unlike some of its competitors, NimbleTV will give customers the ability to select channel packages based on personal preferences, though that'll depend heavily on the TV providers going along for the ride. While the service will only be available in the US and India at first, the company does plan a broader launch at some point in the future. No word yet on how pricing will play out, but there is a NYC-only beta (just as Aereo did) which you can join now by giving the source below a quick click.

WPI Sports and Recreation Center Opening In May. ? Cannon ...
Early last week, I received an official invitation from Worcester Polytechnic Institute to attend a celebration marking the opening of its new Sports and Recreation Center. Cannon Design directed the design of the project and I take great pride in the building and the efforts our team put forth. It will be exciting to attend the opening celebration and see how it transforms the campus.
The invitation to the event conveys WPI?s excitement for the Sports and Recreation Center. It talks about the building?s potential to improve the campus experience and create new opportunities for students and faculty at the university. It creates a stronger and brighter future for the university.
A LEED certified building, the new five-story recreation facility offers a four-court gymnasium, a three-lane perimeter jogging track, a 25-meter, 250-spectator competition swimming pool, three convertible racquetball and squash courts, an eight-person rowing tank and dramatic views of the campus.
The project is part of a larger seven-year fundraising and improvement plan for the university, I?m excited to see this building become a reality and know that Cannon Design has played a part in helping WPI meet its goals.

Did Caravaggio meet a grisly end - with the Vatican's complicity?
Citing documents from the Vatican Secret Archives, an Italian historian argues that 17th-century documents reveal Renaissance artist Caravaggio was assassinated by the Knights of Malta.
In one of his most graphic paintings, the rabble-rousing Renaissance artist Caravaggio?depicted his tortured face on the head of Goliath, slain and decapitated by the boy warrior David.
Skip to next paragraphAn Italian historian thinks that Caravaggio may have met just such a grisly end ? at the hands of the Knights of St. John of Malta, the chivalric order founded during the Crusades.
Vincenzo Pacelli, a Caravaggio expert from the University of Naples, has unearthed documents from the Vatican Secret Archives and state archives in Rome that suggest the Knights ordered the artist to be assassinated in revenge for him attacking and wounding on one of their members during a brawl.
They then dumped his body in the sea at Palo, north of Rome, which would explain why there are no documents recording his death.
Until now, conventional wisdom said Caravaggio died either from an illness or lead poisoning from the oil paints he used.
The murder was ?commissioned and organized? by the Knights of Malta and carried out with the complicity of the Vatican, Mr. Pacelli says in his forthcoming book, "Caravaggio ? Between Art and Science."
The historian found strange discrepancies in correspondence between Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a powerful Vatican secretary of state, and Deodato Gentile, a papal ambassador, in which the painter?s place of death was cited as the island of Procida near Naples, ?a place that Caravaggio had nothing to do with,? according to Pacelli.
A document written by Caravaggio?s doctor and first biographer claimed that the painter died at the age of 38 north of Rome, but the place name was later scrubbed out and replaced by the name of a town in Tuscany.?Pacelli also found an account written 20 years after Caravaggio?s death in which an Italian archivist wrote that the artist had been ?assassinated.?
He believes it all adds up to evidence of an assassination plot by the Knights of Malta which was then covered up.
Not all experts are convinced by the new theory.?John T. Spike, a Caravaggio expert at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., is skeptical of the idea that the painter was murdered on the Knights' orders.
?The problem with the theory is that the Knights had ample opportunities to kill him sooner ? either when he was living in Malta, or when he then went to Sicily, which is very close,? says Mr. Spike. ?Why did they wait so long??
The academic sparring will continue, but more than four centuries after his death in 1610, the true fate of Caravaggio remains an enigma.

Johansson still not over split with Reynolds

Jason Merritt / Getty Images
By Us Weekly
Love takes time to heal -- just ask Scarlett Johansson. Although the "Avengers" actress, 27, has dated other men after her late 2010 divorce from Ryan Reynolds -- including Sean Penn and, currently, NYC ad exec Nate Naylor -- the stunning star tells the May issue of Vogue that she's still hurting from the end of her two-year marriage.
PHOTOS: Scarlett and Ryan in happier times
Johansson calls the breakup "comically amicable," but clarifies that it was still "horrible . . . Of course it's horrible. It was devastating. It really throws you. You think that your life is going to be one way, and then, for various reasons or whatever, it doesn't work out."
She muses that divorce is "like the loneliest thing you'll ever do, in some way."
And while Johansson says she now feels "relative peace," she confides to Vogue that the split from "Safe House" star Reynolds, 35, who has rebounded with Blake Lively, still gives her grief. "I don't feel on the other side of it completely, but it gets better," she says. "It's still there. More than anything, it's just that not having your buddy around all the time is weird. There's no rule book. I think it's just time."
PHOTOS: Go behind the scenes of "The Avengers"
The "We Bought a Zoo" actress is less descriptive when talking about her rebound romance with Penn, 51, with whom she was involved for five months last year.
"We spent time together, yeah," she admits. "I never put a title on it, really, but we were seeing each other."
Regardless, she and the Oscar winner/humanitarian are on excellent terms. "He's a remarkable person . . . He really is."
PHOTOS: ScarJo's romantic history
Her romance with Naylor, 37, was much more low-key; the couple kept their relationship under wraps for five months until going public in late January.
"It must be very strange for him," she says of her non-celebrity beau. "It's totally bizarre. It's an adjustment ? I mean, it's got to be an adjustment for him way more than it was for me at 19," she observes of her first days as a movie star. "But he's really remarkably good about it."

What's the Worst the Mac Flashback Trojan viruses Could Do ...
News which more than 650,000 Mac computer systems were have contracted an awful Trojan viruses equine virus known as ?Flashback? circulated the net a week ago and several scrambled to see if their systems were clean.
Although a lot of up-to-date Apple?s security update to avoid the Flashback Trojan viruses from taking advantage of infected computer systems yet others required steps to get rid of the adware and spyware using their systems altogether, you will find still 1000's of infected Mac computer systems available.
What exactly may be the worst it would do?
Even though the Trojan viruses has become only performing click fraud scam by hijacking people?s internet search engine results in their browsers, her possibility to do greater damage, for example stealing banking or login credential. When the botnet remains linked to computer systems, cybercriminals could send new adware and spyware for their systems that create bigger problems.
To know the energy from the Flashback, it?s worth noting that it is really a household of Mac OS X adware and spyware which was first produced in September 2011. It was made to disguise itself being an Adobe Expensive Player installer, using Expensive player logos. After setting up Flashback, the adware and spyware initially searched for user names and passwords which are saved on Apple computers.
The Flashback Trojan viruses ? a variant from the family ? was lately accustomed to infect computer systems and it is controlled and distributed using a botnet known as Flashfake. The botnet, or perhaps a network of computer systems have contracted malicious software that's controlled like a group, was made to conduct a click fraud scam. This really is common among cyber crooks that make the most of pay-per-click campaigns by advertising companies.
?Previous versions for Flashback adware and spyware depended on social engineering methods and did make an effort to steal users? information,? states Alex Gostev, chief security expert of anti-virus software provider Kaspersky Lab, that has been monitoring the Trojan viruses on the global scale. ?However, the most recent variant that is controlled through the Flashfake botnet is just getting used for click fraud up to now. The primary difference is this fact Flashback Trojan viruses could be installed straight into users? computer systems by taking advantage of the Java vulnerability.?
Although not one other malicious activities been detected through the Trojan viruses, the danger is important since the adware and spyware functions like a downloader on users? computer systems, Kaspersky Lab stated. Which means that cyber crooks behind Flashfake can certainly problem new, up-to-date adware and spyware that's able to stealing private information for example passwords or charge card particulars and do the installation onto infected machines.
A week ago, Apple launched a burglar patch for Java that prevents the Flashback Trojan viruses from taking advantage of the vulnerability to contaminate computer systems. Since that time, Kaspersky Lab stated it's seen a decline in the amount of active bots for Flashfake, shedding from a lot more than 650,000 infected computer systems to simply 237,000.
However, the reduction in infected bots does not necessarily mean the botnet obtained care of out. The amounts represent the active bots linked to Flashfake throughout yesteryear couple of days ? it's not the same as the precise quantity of infected machines. Infected computer systems which were inactive throughout the weekend wouldn't be interacting with Flashfake, causing them to be not appear being an infected bot, the organization stated.
Since not every Mac customers up-to-date their system, the Trojan viruses continues to be infecting Apple computers that don't possess the patch installed.
States Gostev: ?We recommend customers update their systems immediately using the latest security update from Apple.?

US tops global clean energy table
The US has regained top spot from China as the biggest investor in clean energy in 2011, according to global rankings.
The table, published in a report by the Pew Charitable Trusts, showed that US invested more than $48bn (?30bn) in the sector, up from $34bn in 2010.
China slipped to second place, the authors reported, with investment only increasing by $0.5bn to $45.5bn.
Globally, overall financial backing in clean energy technologies hit a record $263bn, up 6.5% from 2010 levels.
The report, Who is Winning the Clean Energy Race, showed that G20 nations accounted for 95% of the investment in the sector (which does not include nuclear power).
The data, compiled by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, ranked the UK as seventh in the world, with $9.4bn of investment in 2011.
Over the course of the year, an additional 83.5 gigawatts (GW) was added to the world's clean energy generation capacity, including almost 30GW of solar and 43GW of wind.
"The sector continues to expand and is outpacing growth in the overall (global) economy. The sector reached its trillionth dollar of investment last year," observed Phyllis Cuttino, director of Pew's Clean Energy Program.
"We now have 565GW of installed (generation) capacity around the world. That outstrips nuclear installed capacity by 47%.
"So I think the facts fly in the face of those individuals who say this is a niche industry. This a growing and maturing sector."

She said market data showed that the US benefited in the short-term from attracting finances, however it was unlikely to be sustained.
"Investors rushed in to take advantage of expiring policies, such as tax incentives, loan guarantees, which expired at the end of 2011," Ms Cuttino told BBC News.
"So when we look at the very rapid rate of growth in investment here in the US, it is hard to see how that could be maintained without the policy mechanism that spurred that growth."
She suggested that there were signs that pointed towards a "drop off" in future clean energy investment as a result of "policy uncertainty".

China in previous years, on the other hand, had enjoyed rapid year-on-year growth, but it only recorded a 0.5% increase during 2011.
Ms Cuttino said this was probably a result of the sector within the country maturing.
"The thing that is noticeable about China is that they are world leaders in terms of attracting asset finance, which is a measure of job creation and deploying renewables.
"This means they are really reaping the rewards of attracting a certain class of investment.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "Battleship" steams into movie theaters overseas this week, giving international audiences the first chance to decide whether a board game-based movie is sea-worthy.
The Hasbro Inc. search-and-destroy game was once a way for kids to while away a summer afternoon. But as it debuts in Europe on Wednesday, "Battleship" the movie has become a potential franchise, sporting Michael Bay-inspired special effects, aliens invading Earth, a bikini-model actress, superstar Rihanna and, of course, lots of guns.
Whether the movie symbolizes Hollywood's lack of new ideas or its brilliance in adapting old ones, Comcast Corp.'s Universal Pictures is betting big that it's the latter. With a reported production budget of $200 million, observers say it will need to reap at least $500 million at box offices worldwide to pay off.
Hollywood's love of the sequel, the prequel, the reboot and the adapted novel all originate from the same premise: Moviegoers are more likely to buy a ticket if they are already familiar with the story.
But not since "Clue" bombed in 1985 has Tinseltown gambled on adapting a popular board game with no apparent storyline.
The idea of turning board games into movies has gained new traction in part because of the huge success of "Transformers," and to a lesser extent "G.I. Joe," which are both based on toys from toymaker Hasbro Inc. The three "Transformers" movies have grossed more than $2.6 billion worldwide, helping lift "Transformers" toys to become Hasbro's top-selling brand last year, exceeding 11 percent of its $4.3 billion in annual revenue.
For Hasbro, the movie is a way to get a globally marketed boost for its games business, which Sterne Agee analyst Margaret Whitfield called "stagnant" and lacking innovation. Turning that stagnation around is a goal of Brian Goldner, Hasbro's CEO since 2008. He told investors in February "we're going to reignite our games business."
If it succeeds, "Battleship" will be the advance guard of a whole fleet of planned adaptations of Hasbro games including "Ouija," also being developed by Universal for release in 2013, as well as "Risk" and "Candy Land," which are both in the works at Sony Corp. "Stretch Armstrong," a movie based on the glutinous-armed toy from Hasbro, is set for 2014 release by Relativity Media.
On paper, "Battleship" scores high on the checklist for blockbuster success: a hero in a life-or-death struggle against incomparable odds, a steamy love interest, a star-studded cast that includes Liam Neeson, and a whole lot of destruction and mayhem.
Marketing of the film borrows heavily on its successful predecessor, and trailers proclaim that the movie is "From Hasbro the company that brought you Transformers." Churning metal weaponry and explosions are unmistakably reminiscent of the special effects used in "Transformers," which was directed by Michael Bay.
"It reeks of 'Transformers,' which is all a good thing," says Gene Del Vecchio, an entertainment research consultant and author of "Creating Blockbusters: How to Generate and Market Hit Entertainment for TV, Movies, Video Games and Books."
The movie also has "built-in appeal" with parents who feel nostalgic about the game and want to pass it on to their children, he says.
That formula of appealing to parents with young kids has served Hollywood well, and this summer's line-up of popcorn fare includes everything from decades-old comic book superheroes "The Avengers," ''The Dark Knight Rises," and "The Amazing Spider-Man" to two dueling versions of Snow White.
Every year, about a dozen movies have toy-related tie-ins and this year is no different. Success really depends on word of mouth, not what got the first wave of filmgoers in the door.
While decrying Hollywood's lack of original ideas, UCLA screenwriting professor Richard Walter says the only chance for "Battleship" to succeed is if "they threw away everything but the title and made a good movie."
On the surface, little about "Battleship" the movie resembles the board game.
In the game, players call out letters and numbers that correspond to their opponents' grid, hoping to hit and sink a set of ships hidden there.
In the movie, alien ships burst out of their hiding place in the ocean and trap some battleships under a giant force field inside which the two sides must duke it out. The aliens appear to have weapons with distinctly peg-like shapes, along with some spinning metal balls of death known as "shredders," which were not part of the board game.
Hasbro has that little wrinkle covered.
The company is releasing a new version of the game using cards that enable the wielder to wipe out a whole row or column of their opponents' pieces, offering kids a way to relive the experience of the movie at home.
The mind-numbing array of toy-related movies might have some people groaning. That doesn't mean the trend will end any time soon.
"The parents can get fatigued, but children don't," says Jim Silver, editor in chief of toy-reviewing website TimetoPlayMag.com, who says parents usually succumb to their children's demands for movie-related toys.
"If you take three kids to the movies and they love it, and they want to have that play experience at home ... chances are parents are going to buy it. However, if they never see the movie, then that's a different story." Battleship debuts in the U.S. on May 18.

Catholic Church says child abuse cases rose in 2011
CHICAGO (Reuters) - The number of credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors committed by Roman Catholic priests or deacons in the United States rose 15 percent last year, and the church spent $144 million to deal with the ongoing scandal, according to a church-sponsored audit released on Tuesday.
A total of 489 people reported credible allegations of abuse by priests or deacons in 2011, the bulk of them involving adults victimized when they were children decades ago by now-deceased clerics, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said in a report on its ninth annual audit of the issue.
Twenty-one of the victims were younger than 19 and victimized more recently. Attorneys for victims say there are likely tens of thousands more victims who have never come forward since the scandal erupted in Boston in 2002.
"We renew our promise to strive to the fullest to end the societal scourge of child sexual abuse," Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the conference, said in an introductory letter to the report.
Critics of the church's handling of the sex abuse crisis scoffed at the audit, saying it minimized the extent of the abuse and the culpability of the church hierarchy.
The yearly audit for the bishops identified credible allegations against 406 priests or deacons. In 2010, there were 428 credible allegations against 345 offenders. More than one-third of the alleged perpetrators had never been charged before.
The figures for victims and offenders were twice as high earlier in the decade, then dropped off beginning in 2008.
Twelve accused clerics remained active in ministry pending the outcome of investigations. Eleven percent of new allegations were deemed false.
Altogether, U.S. dioceses and religious institutes spent $144 million on abuse settlement-related costs, which included $50 million for settlements, $37 million in attorneys' fees, $6 million on therapy for victims and $10 million on support for offenders. About a quarter of the settlement amount was covered by church insurance policies.
The church spent another $33 million on child protection efforts last year. Nearly all church employees have undergone training on the issue, the bishops' audit said, and a majority of children in parishes have been instructed how identify when they are being "groomed" for abuse and what to do.
"The church must continue to be vigilant. The church must do all she can never to let abuse happen again. And we must all continue to work with full resolve toward the healing and reconciliation of the victims/survivors," Dolan said.
The yearly audit was conducted for the first time by StoneBridge Business Partners, which visited one-third of the 195 dioceses. Data was also provided by the Georgetown University-based Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate.
Critics such as the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP) and BishopAccountability.org have said the church cannot police itself, and that the crime of church higher-ups hiding and transferring offending priests is a persistent problem.
SNAP's outreach director Barbara Dorris called the audits "nearly meaningless." BishopAccountability.org president Terence McKiernan called it a "serious disservice to the public by pretending that all is well."
A trial is under way for a member of the church hierarchy in Philadelphia, Monsignor William Lynn, who is accused of transferring offending priests to unsuspecting parishes.
Lynn, 61, is the highest-ranking member of the U.S. church to go on trial in an abuse-related case, though Kansas City, Missouri, Bishop Robert Finn is to go on trial in September on a charge he failed to report to authorities about a priest found with pornographic pictures of young girls.
"Those horrific cases prove that, when it comes to kids' safety, little in church hierarchy has changed," Dorris said.
McKiernan of BishopAccountability.org said the number of priests credibly accused of molesting children since 1950 has now increased to more than 6,100.
Altogether, U.S. dioceses have spent $2.1 billion on settlement-related costs for the abuse scandal between 2004 through last year, according to the report. Eight dioceses, a Jesuit province, and the Irish Christian Brotherhood, a Catholic brotherhood that runs schools and orphanages, have declared bankruptcy since 2004, claiming overwhelming debts from the costs of the scandal.

Alzheimer's precursor protein controls its own fate, study finds
A research team led by the University of South Florida Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences has found that a fragment of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) -- known as sAPP-? and associated with Alzheimer's disease -- appears to regulate its own production. The finding may lead to ways to prevent or treat Alzheimer's disease by controlling the regulation of APP.
Their study is published online today in Nature Communications.
"The purpose of this study was to help better understand why, in most cases of Alzheimer's disease, the processing of APP becomes deregulated, which leads to the formation of protein deposits and neuron loss," said study senior author Dr. Jun Tan, professor of psychiatry and the Robert A. Silver Chair, Rashid Laboratory for Developmental Neurobiology at the USF Silver Child Development Center. "The many risk factors for Alzheimer's disease can change the way APP is processed, and these changes appear to promote plaque formation and neuron loss."
An estimated 30 million people worldwide and 5 million in the U.S. have Alzheimer's. With the aging of the "Baby Boom" generation, the prevalence of the debilitating disease is expected to increase dramatically in the U.S. in the coming years. Currently, there are no disease-modifying treatments to prevent, reverse or halt the progression of Alzheimer's disease, only medications that may improve symptoms for a short time.
"For the first time, we have direct evidence that a secreted portion of APP itself, so called 'sAPP-?,' acts as an essential stop-gap mechanism," said the study's lead author Dr. Demian Obregon, a resident specializing in research in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences at USF Health. "Risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease lead to a decline in sAPP-? levels, which results in excessive activity of a key enzyme in A? formation,"
In initial studies using cells, and in follow-up studies using mice genetically engineered to mimic Alzheimer's disease, the investigators found that the neutralization of sAPP-? leads to enhanced A? formation. This activity depended on sAPP-?'s ability to associate with the APP-converting enzyme, BACE1. When this interaction was blocked, A? formation was restored.
The authors suggest that through monitoring and correcting low sAPP-? levels, or through enhancing its association with BACE, Alzheimer's disease may be prevented or treated.

Sexual reproduction brings long-term benefits, study shows
Courtship rituals can be all-consuming, demanding time and effort ? but now scientists have discovered why it might be worth it.
Attracting a mate ? which can take significant effort, such as in a peacock's show of feathers or the exhaustive rutting of stags ? can produce benefits for a species in the long term, a study suggests.
Scientists have shown that animals and plants which reproduce sexually are at a considerable advantage to those species ? such as some insects and reptiles ? that reproduce without a partner.
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied sexual reproduction in tiny fruit flies to learn more about how DNA is randomly shuffled when the genes of two parents combine to create a new individual.
They found that this recombination of genetic material allows for damaging elements of DNA ? which might cause disease or other potential drawbacks ? to be weeded out within a few generations. Individuals who inherit healthy genes tend to flourish and pass on their DNA to the next generation, while weaker individuals are more likely to die without reproducing.
The findings, made possible by genome sequencing technology, provide strong evidence to back up a long-standing theory that sexual reproduction, rather than asexual cloning of an individual, has long-term benefits for a species.
Scientists studied how the DNA of fruit flies is affected when the recombination of DNA does not occur. They found that harmful DNA quickly accumulates, making the species weaker overall in the long term.
Researchers say the findings may help inform the development of crop species with high yields. The study, published in Genome Biology and Evolution, was supported by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council.

If police officers were to file a subpoena for your Facebook information, they would receive a?printout of the data from the social network. This?printout would be so detailed, complete and creepy that you should strive to be a good law-abiding citizen, just to prevent it from ever existing.
We have just learned about the true nature of Facebook's responses to subpoenas thanks to documents uncovered by the Boston Phoenix, an alternative weekly.
While researching a story about?a man dubbed the "Craigslist Killer,"?reporters at the Phoenix had access to "a huge trove of case files released by the Boston Police Department." And in the process of?sifting through all of those documents, they discovered the Boston Police's subpoena of the suspect's Facebook information??as well as the data provided by the social network.
The data?? which really did come in the form of an old-fashioned paper printout rather than as a digital file of some sort?? included all of the suspect's wall posts, photos he'd uploaded, photos he'd been tagged in, a list of his Facebook friends, and "a long table of login and IP data." Based on a look at the actual documents, it appears the login and IP data actually lists which parts of Facebook the individual accessed?? down to the photos, groups and profiles he viewed.
According to a published FAQ, this is Facebook's fairly extensive law enforcement policy:
We work with law enforcement where appropriate and to the extent required by law to ensure the safety of the people who use Facebook. We may disclose information pursuant to subpoenas, court orders, or other requests (including criminal and civil matters) if we have a good faith belief that the response is required by law. This may include respecting requests from jurisdictions outside of the United States where we have a good faith belief that the response is required by law under the local laws in that jurisdiction, apply to users from that jurisdiction, and are consistent with generally accepted international standards.?
We may also share information when we have a good faith belief it is necessary to prevent fraud or other illegal activity, to prevent imminent bodily harm, or to protect ourselves and you from people violating our?Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, courts or other government entities.
If you'd like to see how the information looks, the printout of the "Craigslist Killer" suspect, who committed suicide before the trial could reach a resolution, has?been posted online by the Boston Phoenix.?Both the Boston Police as well as the Boston Phoenix have redacted parts of the documents. From what we can tell, Facebook doesn't censor any data before responding to a subpoena, but we have asked the social network for confirmation.
