PCs have been making their way into living rooms for some time now, but the Dell Inspiron One 2320 ($1,249.99 direct) is one of the few designed to replace your TV?and it's more than just a well-equipped all-in-one desktop. The included Intel Core i5 processor and Nvidia GPU provide potent horsepower and multimedia capabilities for any day-to-day task. And an impressive number of media-centric options, like a TV tuner, inputs for HDMI, VGA, and composite video, and a good-old-fashioned remote control, will make this system a part of your entertainment setup for years to come.
Design
The Dell Inspiron One 2320 has an adjustable easel back stand and two metal legs, providing a sturdy surface that will withstand taps and touches without a wobble. There's plenty of room between those two legs to slip the included wireless keyboard out of the way. The legs and easel back stand can be removed and replaced with an optional wall mount ($49.99). And thanks to a broad selection of media inputs (see "Features" below), the 23-inch, 1,920-by-1,080-resolution screen, which produced crystal-clear images whether streaming 1080p YouTube clips or watching Blu-ray video, can remain useful long after the internal components have aged.
As with Dell's past all-in-ones, the Inspiron One 2320's components are all located behind the screen; but the combined PC and monitor only measures 2.67 inches thick, only a little beefier than a regular 23-inch television. Only two things might cramp the system's style as a TV. The built-in speakers don't have the THX sound of the older Dell Inspiron One IO2305-4429MSL ($849.99 list, 4 stars), but the SRS Premium sound they offer is clear (if light on bass) at all but the highest volumes; to get the most out this as an entertainment system, you'll definitely want to add a decent subwoofer. The Inspiron One 2320 also uses a large power brick, which distinguishes it from other all-in-ones that require only a power cord.
The touchscreen lets you navigate through programs with a tap of the finger, and supports multitouch gestures for resizing and rotating as needed. Dell's proprietary Stage interface aims to make the Inspiron One 2320 even more finger-friendly, bringing a tile-based user interface to the desktop and Web browser. Unfortunately, it's weighted pretty heavily in favor of media, with icons for MusicStage, PhotoStage, VideoStage, and SyncUP powered by Nero; for other tasks, you might want to stick to regular Windows. The wireless keyboard and mouse share a single 2.4GHz wireless USB adapter that lets you type and click from up to 33 feet away. The compact keyboard is even spill resistant, so there's no reason not to use it while chilling on the couch. While you're there, the included TV-style remote has all of the standard media buttons, as well as controls for navigating between Web pages or TV channels when watching over-the-air programming through the integrated TV tuner.
Features
The Dell Inspiron One 2320 is decked out with all the features you could want in a desktop, plus a collection of entertainment inputs that will keep this all-in-one useful even when the components have been surpassed by newer models. On the right of the system, you'll find a tray-loading Blu-ray combo drive (BD-R, DVD?RW), the power button, and a button for toggling between the available video inputs. On the left, there is a multiformat card reader (SD, SDXC, SDHC, MMC, MS/Pro, xD), two USB 2.0 ports, headphone and microphone jacks, and buttons for adjusting the audio volume and display brightness.
It's on the back of the system that things get interesting. There you'll find a large panel stretching across the length of the chassis that's covered with ports and connectors. On one side of it are four USB 2.0 ports, audio output, Gigabit Ethernet, a power connector, VGA output, and a coaxial connection for hooking up an antenna or cable box. On the other end of the rear panel you'll find the aforementioned HDMI-in, VGA, and composite video inputs, as well as an S/PDIF connection and a case lock slot. But if you're looking for faster USB 3.0 ports or an HDMI-out port for connecting to an HDTV or other external display, you're out of luck.
Internally, the Inspiron One 2320 has a built-in TV tuner, as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi) 2.0, a wireless HDMI replacement that also requires a $99 Netgear Push2TV HD adapter. The 2TB hard drive is spacious?larger than the 1TB drive found in the Editors' Choice Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W ($999.99 list, 4.5 stars)?and spins at a respectable 7,200rpm. Dell has preinstalled on it the Windows 7 Touch Pack and Microsoft Office Starter 2010, which offers basic word processing and spreadsheet functions, but no PowerPoint or Outlook. A one-year trial of DataSafe 2.0 provides 2GB of online backup for a year, and even more generous is the 15-month trial of McAfee Security Center. Given how many manufacturers provide the same one- or two-month trials that can be found for free online, a trial this lengthy is a welcome addition. Dell also covers the Inspiron One 2320 with its basic one-year warranty, which includes parts and labor, 24/7 phone support, and in-home service for hardware.
Performance
Dell has equipped the Inspiron One 2320 with a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5-2400S processor?a step up from the Core i3 found in the Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W and the same processor found in the Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,199 list, 4.5 stars)?and 8GB of RAM, which proves a good combination for everyday computer work. In our CineBench R11.5 rendering test, which serves as our processor speed benchmark, the Inspiron scored 3.35, ahead of the 2.69 of the Toshiba DX735-D3201, but behind the 4.47 of the HP TouchSmart 610-1150y ($1,199.99 list, 4.5 stars) and the 4.13 of the iMac. In our PCMark 7 general-use test the Inspiron scored a category-leading 2,718, compared with the 2,690 of the Toshiba DX735-D3201 ($899.99 list, 3.5 stars) and the 2,167 of the VAIO VPC-L231FX/W.
The Inspiron also performed well in multimedia tests. In Handbrake, the Inspiron encoded our test video in 1 minute 29 seconds, tying with the TouchSmart 610-1150y and beating out such competitors as the Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W, which took 2 minutes 22 seconds and Samsung Series 7 (DP700A38-01) ($999.99 list, 4 stars), which took 2 minutes 5 seconds. We saw similarly good results in Photoshop CS5, which the Inspiron ran through in 3:38, ahead of every competitor except the Apple iMac (3:29). Whether you dabble in digital photography or think yourself the indie director of tomorrow, the Inspiron One 2320 will be a powerful and useful multimedia tool.
Thanks to its discrete Nvidia GeForce GT 525M video card, the Inspiron One 2320 delivers some of the best graphics and gaming performance available in an all-in-one. In 3DMark 11, the Inspiron One 2320 scored 1,581 on the Entry preset and 293 points on Extreme. Competing systems utilizing integrated graphics were unable to run the test at all. Many comparable systems are unable to even run our DirectX 11 Lost Planet 2 gaming test, but the Inspiron One 2320 pumped out a respectable 23 frames per second (30fps is considered playable). The Inspiron One 2320 also produced playable frame rates of 42fps in Crysis when running at low resolution and detail settings, opening the door for plenty of midrange games. The only all-in-one better at gaming was the Apple iMac (70fps in Crysis, 32fps in Lost Planet 2), but it offers a smaller screen and no touch capabilities.
The Dell Inspiron One 2320 wins us over with its combination of category-leading performance right now and entertainment features that will keep the all-in-one in use for years. A few omissions, like the lack of HDMI output and USB 3.0, might be a deal breaker for some, but most will be able to overlook it. Even with these flaws the Inspiron Omni 2320 is a fine system that should satisfy most computer shoppers, and it surpasses our previous Editors' Choice Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W.

Former Saturday Night Live staff writer Joe Bodolai has died in an apparent suicide. His body was discovered yesterday by a cleaning crew at an L.A. hotel.
Law enforcement sources say Bodolai, who wrote several Wayne's World sketches for SNL as well as the movie, had been staying there more than a week.
A mixture of anti-freeze and Gatorade may have done him in, TMZ reports.
Bodolai also had posted what appears to be a suicide note on December 23 on his blog, titled, "If This Was Your Last Day Alive What Would You Do?"
He goes on to describe some of the things he remembers, and laments.
In the note, Bodolai writes about "Stuff I Would Like to Have Seen In My Life" such as the Browns winning the Super Bowl and the "truth" about JFK.
The 63-year-old also lists "Things I Regret" such as "My inability to conquer alcoholism" followed by "The things I did because of it." Very sad.
He also lists "Things I Am Proud Of" - family members, his time as an SNL staff writer and "writing the first draft of Wayne’s World with Mike Myers."
Bodolai concludes his apparent sign-off to the world with this: "May you all have the happy lives you deserve. Thank you all for being in my life."

Over 65 million years North American mammal evolution has tracked with climate change
Tuesday, December 27, 2011History often seems to happen in waves ? fashion and musical tastes turn over every decade and empires give way to new ones over centuries. A similar pattern characterizes the last 65 million years of natural history in North America, where a novel quantitative analysis has identified six distinct, consecutive waves of mammal species diversity, or "evolutionary faunas." What force of history determined the destiny of these groupings? The numbers say it was typically climate change.
"Although we've always known in a general way that mammals respond to climatic change over time, there has been controversy as to whether this can be demonstrated in a quantitative fashion," said Brown University evolutionary biology Professor Christine Janis. "We show that the rise and fall of these faunas is indeed correlated with climatic change ? the rise or fall of global paleotemperatures ? and also influenced by other more local perturbations such as immigration events."
Specifically, of the six waves of species diversity that Janis and her Spanish collaborators describe online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, four show statistically significant correlations with major changes in temperature. The two transitions that show a weaker but still apparent correlation with the pattern correspond to periods when mammals from other continents happened to invade in large numbers, said Janis, who is the paper's senior and second author.
Previous studies of the potential connection between climate change and mammal species evolution have counted total species diversity in the fossil record over similar time periods. But in this analysis, led by postdoctoral scholar Borja Figueirido, the scientists asked whether there were any patterns within the species diversity that might be significant. They were guided by a similar methodology pioneered in a study of "evolutionary faunas" in marine invertebrates by Janis' late husband Jack Sepkoski, who was a paleontologist at the University of Chicago.
What the authors found is six distinct and consecutive groupings of mammal species that shared a common rise, peak and decline in their numbers. For example, the "Paleocene fauna" had largely given way to the "early-middle Eocene fauna" by about 50 million years ago. Moreover, the authors found that these transfers of dominance correlated with temperature shifts, as reflected in data on past levels of atmospheric oxygen (determined from the isotopes in the fossilized remains of deep sea microorganisms).
By the numbers, the research showed correlations between species diversity and temperature change, but qualitatively, it also provided a narrative of how the traits of typical species within each wave made sense given the changes in vegetation that followed changes in climate. For example, after a warming episode about 20 million years in the early Miocene epoch, the dominant vegetation transitioned from woodland to a savannah-like grassland. It is no surprise, therefore, that many of the herbivores that comprised the accompanying "Miocene fauna" had high-crowned teeth that allowed them to eat the foods from those savannah sources.
To the extent that the study helps clarify scientists' understanding of evolution amid climate changes, it does not do so to the extent that they can make specific predictions about the future, Janis said. But it seems all the clearer that climate change has repeatedly had meaningful effect over millions of years.
"Such perturbations, related to anthropogenic climatic change, are currently challenging the fauna of the world today, emphasizing the importance of the fossil record for our understanding of how past events affected the history of faunal diversification and extinction, and hence how future climactic changes may continue to influence life on earth," the authors wrote in the paper.

Assessing the stability of North Korea in the wake of Kim Jong Il's death has been a matter of reading between the lines, but there are signs that the communist country's government is at least trying to project the appearance of a smooth transition.
Kim's son, the baby-faced twenty-something Kim Jong Un, is the presumed successor, raising questions about whether the country's military leadership will rally behind him, as it did behind his dictator father. In recent days, state media has disseminated images showing the younger Kim in the company of generals who supported Kim Jong Il.
The footage of the generals and Kim Jong Un, hailed as the military's "supreme commander," was shot on Saturday and shown on state TV on Sunday, as they paid their respects to the late leader.
A source in South Korea told Reuters that it also marked the first time that one of the country's more powerful behind-the-scenes player, Jang Song Thaek, was seen on state TV in a military uniform. Jang was Kim Jong Un's brother-in-law and his chief political lieutenant in recent years.
Another Reuters source suggested that the country was moving from strongman rule to government controlled by multiple leaders.
"Most of the top generals and key party leaders, their family ties with the Kims go back to World War II," Bruce Bechtol, director of the Center for Security Studies at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, told the Wall Street Journal.
The Journal also notes that the dictator in North Korea's government stands in the middle of three competing forces, the political party, the military and the state security department.
"I don't think anyone in the elite would try to grab power (from the dictator) because there is a well-established check-and-balance system. It would be suicidal," Chang Yong-seok, senior researcher at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University, told the Journal.
The ongoing shift of power poses new challenges for the Obama administration, which has reacted cautiously to Kim Jong Il's death.
For the past 60 years, the "hermit kingdom" has vexed the United States and its allies with war, nuclear tests, missile launches, belligerence and bellicose bombast. But since he took office, President Obama has had to deal with the country at perhaps its most secretive point: an unclear succession at the very top at a time of deep concern about the stability of the regime.
The kid gloves treatment accorded to the North's youthful new leader has attracted criticism from some who see this is a moment to make a forceful case for dramatic reform and regime change.
But without solid intelligence of the opaque transition process and fearful of misunderstandings that could lead to provocations with the notoriously erratic North, U.S. officials concluded that the best course is to say little, wait and watch.
"All I can say is that we're monitoring the situation closely," White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Wednesday as North Korean state media broadcast pictures of wailing mourners, apparently overcome with grief. "Kim Jong Il had designated Kim Jong Un as his official successor, and at this time we have no indication that that has changed."
Carney added: "We hope that the new North Korean leadership will take the steps necessary to support peace, prosperity and a better future for the North Korean people, including through acting on its commitments to denuclearization."

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) ? The FBI joined the search for a missing 9-year-old Indiana girl with physical and emotional problems Monday as agents descended on the mobile home park where she lived and that's a known haven for registered sex offenders.
About a half-dozen people in black windbreakers, several of whom identified themselves as FBI agents, were at the mobile home park Monday where Aliahna Lemmon went missing from a family friend's home on Friday. Some with search dogs were seen at a nearby storage facility.
Monday's renewed search came a day after local police declined to search Sunday. Allen County sheriff's department officials also originally had not planned to search Monday either, unless new leads arose through tips from the public or interviews, Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel, a department spokesman, said earlier in the day.
Local police haven't said what they think happened to Aliahna.
Meanwhile, agents at the scene Monday wouldn't say why the FBI was involved. An agency spokesman didn't immediately return phone calls and e-mails seeking comment.
More than 100 emergency workers conducted an extensive search Saturday for Aliahna around the rundown mobile home park on Fort Wayne's north side where she was last seen. No active search was done Sunday for the girl.
According to a state website, 15 registered sex offenders live at the mobile home park that numbers about two dozen homes.
Elizabeth Watkins, 52, who has lived at the park for six months with her 4-year-old granddaughter, said it's well-known that several sex offenders live in the neighborhood.
"It's scary," she said. "I don't know how a parent could leave their child alone."
Aliahna's mother, Tarah Souders, 28, told The Journal Gazette her daughter has vision and hearing problems and suffers from attention deficit disorder and emotional problems. She also has a history of sleepwalking, family members said.
Aliahna and her sisters were staying at a family friend's nearby home because their mother had been sick with the flu and Aliahna's stepfather works at night and sleeps during the day, The Journal Gazette reported Monday.
Mike Plumadore, 39, told the newspaper Sunday that he left the three girls in his mobile home about 6 a.m. Friday and went to a gas station about a mile away to buy a cigar. Authorities have said the store's surveillance video shows him there about that time.
"I had deadbolted the door," he said. "When I got back, all the girls was here."
He said he smoked his cigar and went back to sleep, then woke up about 10 a.m. when Aliahna's mother called. After that call, he realized the door to the home was unlocked and that Aliahna was gone. He said Aliahna's sisters, both 6 years old, told him that Aliahna had left with her mom.
Plumadore said it wasn't until he talked with Aliahna's mom about 8:30 p.m. that they realized she was missing and police were notified.
Plumadore is not listed on the state's website that lists registered sex offenders.
Tarah Souders said miscommunication between the two of them caused the delay in determining that Aliahna had vanished.
"She's never wandered off," Souders said. "She's never done anything like this before."
But Aliahna does have a history of sleepwalking, even unlocking doors and going outside while sleeping, said her grandmother, Amber Story.
"I just hope that she's not suffering or in pain," Story said.
Souders said her daughter also has vision and hearing problems and suffers from attention deficit disorder and emotional problems.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? The International Criminal Court freed a Rwandan rebel Friday and returned him to France after dismissing murder and rape charges against him.
Callixte Mbarushimana, who spent 11 months in detention, was the first war crimes suspect to be arrested and freed without trial since the court began work in 2002 as the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal.
The court said Mbarushimana, who had lived in Paris before his arrest, was "released on French territory, as he requested" through the cooperation of the Netherlands and France.
Mbarushimana was charged with five counts of murder, rape, torture and persecution allegedly committed by Rwandan rebels in neighboring Congo.
In a 2-1 decision, pretrial judges ruled last week that the evidence against him was insufficient to warrant a trial, and ordered him freed.
Prosecutors lost an appeal last Tuesday, but his release was delayed because he was still the subject of a U.N. travel ban. France asked for a delay to allow time to clear his transfer with the U.N. Sanctions Committee.
Prosecutors accused Mbarushimana of being a senior member of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, known by its French acronym FDLR, which is made up of former guerrillas accused of genocide in Rwanda's 1994 ethnic slaughter.
The group's killing spree in Congo in 2009 that left hundreds dead was aimed at forcing Rwanda to accept their return.
Prosecutors allege that Mbarushimana's role was coordinating "an international campaign of propaganda and extortion" aimed at furthering the FDLR cause.
Mbarushimana signed his name to FDLR press releases issued from Paris, but denied his group was involved in atrocities. He described the FDLR as a political and military organization intent on bringing reform to Rwanda.
It was yet another narrow escape for Mbarushimana, a former computer technician for the U.N. Development Program, who has evaded trial several times for the 1994 genocide and the ensuing struggle. Some half a million Tutsis were murdered by ethnic Hutus in 100 days in the summer of 1994.
Mbarushimana was arrested and held for two months in 2001while working for the U.N. in Kosovo before he was released because his indictment was faulty. Later he was indicted by the International Criminal Court for Rwanda, but again his case was dropped, apparently because the court was focusing on higher-level suspects. In 2008 he was arrested in Frankfurt when German authorities found his name on the U.N. sanctions list. He was released four months later.

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann talks to supporters during a campaign stop at Tangleberries, a coffee shop and gift shop in Centerville, Iowa, on Friday. With the caucuses two days after New Year's, there's little break from the TV ads and robocalls.
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published Saturday December 24, 2011COUNCIL BLUFFS ? Ahhhh, Christmas in Iowa.
Church tonight. Presents tomorrow. Exchanges on Monday. Politicians on Tuesday.
During this caucus season of giving, Iowans will see the race for the Republican presidential nomination at full force, as hopefuls jockey over the few days left until Jan. 3.
That's when voters will decide who walks away with a caucus win or at least a ticket out of Iowa in the first showdown of the effort to pick which GOP candidate goes up against President Barack Obama next year.
With the caucuses just two days after New Year's, the candidate visits, town hall meetings, television advertisements and calls are now as much a part of Iowa holiday traditions as presents and green bean casserole.
"To me, it's an interruption," said Ray Thompson of Council Bluffs, a registered Republican doing his Christmas shopping at the Mall of the Bluffs this week.
Added his wife, Deb: "This is supposed to be family time."
Among those courting Iowa Republicans are former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.
Their efforts will get more intense after a day or two off for Christmas.
"They take time off even if they don't want to," said Dennis Goldford, a political scientist at Drake University in Des Moines. "They don't want to irritate the religious conservatives who are a big part of their party."
But the absence of the candidates this weekend might not be enough to make Iowans' hearts grow fonder.
"We're going to get bombarded with TV ads during the holidays," Goldford said.
But what really frustrates Lila Hoogeveen and Myra Hansen, both registered Republicans from Griswold, are the robocalls.
"I get at least four or five a day," Hoogeveen said. This time of year, when friends and family members ring up to catch up, she's left screening calls.
Both women plan to caucus but said they are undecided whom to support.
The majority of Iowans don't participate in the caucuses, Goldford said. They feel the intrusions even more.
"For the average person, if you don't participate in the caucuses, it's just relentless," he said. "This time of year is when the average person will . see it most often."
Even so, it's a big week for candidates. Goldford said they'll likely focus on rounding up current supporters to get out on Jan. 3 instead of trying to persuade undecided voters to pick them.
"After a certain point . you have to work on mobilization," he said. "You have to get the people out who support you."
It's possible that Iowans, after years of being first in the nation, are used to it all.
Democrats Diane and Scott Rathman of Council Bluffs said the ads, calls and appearances will continue, because Iowa is a general election swing state.
As Diane Rathman said: "When Christmas is over, we know it's going to get really bad. But we know it's going to get far worse by June or July."

BEIJING | Fri Dec 23, 2011 10:28am IST
BEIJING (Reuters) - When Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda arrives in China on Sunday, a new blockbuster movie will ensure that the foremost image of the Japanese in many Chinese people's minds will once again be of the country's brutal wartime misdeeds.
The story of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, around which Zhang Yimou's "The Flowers of War" is set, is taught from a young age in China, and countless television serials, documentaries and books ensure the topic is never out of the public eye for long.
Since going on wide release last week, the film, which stars Hollywood actor Christian Bale, has played to sell-out audiences who weep openly during its more disturbing scenes, and has taken 200 million yuan ($31.6 million) at the box office to date.
The film has won top-level political support. Its opening night was held in a government building and it is China's Oscar entry for best foreign language film, though it has received rather tepid reviews in the United States.
And director Zhang, who once made edgy films that challenged conventions, has since gone mainstream. He is now firmly viewed as a national hero after orchestrating the dazzling opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
"The Flowers of War", with its dark hints of necrophilia and male rape and scenes of graphic violence, resembles in parts Chinese government-made anti-Japanese propaganda films, and it is certainly having that effect on many in the audience.
"What horrible people the Japanese are," said student Zhao Lan, after going to a packed showing at a Beijing cinema. "How can they be that crazy and mad!"
"The Japanese soldiers are terrible, and I cannot understand why they still do not want to apologize for their wrongdoings," added a man who gave his surname as Sun.
China says invading Japanese troops slaughtered 300,000 men, women and children in Nanjing, then known as Nanking. An Allied tribunal after World War Two put the death toll at about 142,000.
The film has also triggered a surge of anti-Japanese comments on China's popular Twitter-like microblogs.
"After watching that film, my hatred of Japan has suddenly deepened!" wrote "Ruruzh" on Sina's Weibo.
"We should take action now and boycott all Japanese products!" added "De Meigao".
Some web users suggested Noda see the film when he is in China on his two-day visit, his first since taking office in September.
"I suggest Premier Wen invite Noda to watch the film, and take history as a mirror," wrote "Chen YumoOOOOOO" on portal sina.com.
Both Zhang and Bale have said they did not intend to make a film to whip up anti-Japanese sentiment or hatred.
"I do not think people will be so narrow-minded as to hate someone just after watching a film," Zhang told Reuters this month. "Today's world is somewhere people all wish for peace, and want to live happily with others. Art is only art."
Bale, who landed himself in the government's bad books by trying to visit a detained rights lawyer before leaving China, said that if the film ended up promoting hate, "that would be the worst outcome for me".
"Any war movie that intended that, clearly should not be made. Any movie concerning war should have its aim to be the opposite of that -- it should be reconciliation, it should be understanding," he told Reuters.
Sino-Japanese ties have been shadowed for years by what Beijing says has been Tokyo's refusal to admit to atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in the country between 1931 and 1945.
Some Japanese historians say the Nanjing Massacre has been exaggerated and some conservatives deny there was even a massacre at all, prompting howls of complaints from China.

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Yahoo Inc is considering a plan to unload most of its prized Asian assets in a complex deal valued at roughly $17 billion, sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday, winning nods of approval from Wall Street and driving its shares higher.
The offer - the latest among proposals put forth in recent months to resuscitate the once high-flying Internet company - is expected to be considered by Yahoo's board on Thursday, sources said.
The board was uninterested in entertaining offers for the entire company at this point, said one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Yahoo's increasing difficulty in competing with Internet heavyweights such as Google Inc and Facebook have forced it to explore proposals to revamp its business.
The former Internet powerhouse, which fired its Chief Executive Carol Bartz in September, has a market value of around $18.5 billion.
The Asian split-off plan to be considered by the board follows previous proposals by private equity firms to buy a minority stake in Yahoo. Those proposals were fiercely opposed by some of Yahoo's largest shareholders, including activist hedge fund manager Dan Loeb, of Third Point LLC.
"It's clear that Dan Loeb at Third Point is exerting some influence," said Adam Seessel, director of research at Martin Capital Management, which added to its position in Yahoo a few weeks ago. He "is doing all Yahoo shareholders a favor by looking over the board and making sure they do the right thing."
Yahoo shares, which languished in the red along with much of the technology sector on Wednesday, reversed course and ended the session almost 6 percent higher at $15.99. It inched further upward in after-hours trading to $16.09.
At a $17 billion valuation, which includes the value of the Alibaba stake that Yahoo would retain under the latest proposal, a deal would mean the Asian assets are worth $14 per Yahoo share, one of the sources said.
The deal would essentially mean that Yahoo's core U.S.-based Internet business is valued at only $2 a share, according to Lawrence Haverty, a fund manager with GAMCO investors, which owns Yahoo shares.
Given that Yahoo has roughly $2 a share in cash on its balance sheet, Haverty said the deal left plenty of room for upside in the core business.
"This is the right thing to do. This is how you maximize shareholder value," he said, noting that he believed the tax-free structure of the plan seemed feasible.
TAX-FREE DEAL
Alibaba chief Jack Ma has said several times he would like to buy back Yahoo's stake in his company, one of Asia's largest Internet corporations. Investors have long said Yahoo's investment in Alibaba, along with its 35 percent slice of Yahoo Japan, are far and away the U.S. company's most prized assets.
In the deal under contemplation, Yahoo would effectively transfer most of its 40 percent slice of Alibaba back to the Chinese company and all of its stake in Yahoo Japan to Softbank Corp, sources said.
Alibaba and Yahoo Japan would each create separate legal entities where they would put cash and operating assets, and then trade those with Yahoo, making the deal tax-free, the sources said.
At the end of the contemplated transaction Yahoo would retain a 15 percent stake in Alibaba, the sources said.
The final deal size will depend on how the assets are valued, another source said.
"It's definitely a step in the right direction. It shows that the board is thinking about shareholders as opposed to their own interests," Martin Capital's Seessel said.
Yahoo declined to comment. The possible deals were first reported in The New York Times.
Last week, sources told Reuters a consortium consisting of private equity group Silver Lake, Microsoft Corp and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz were reworking a bid for a minority stake in Yahoo.

The Holidays are upon us; Chanukah is underway, Christmas is almost here, and it's time to get those last-minute gifts. We've given you ideas for people who already have all the games they want, for people who like science and other thinky pursuits, and for your teenage son who seems pretty normal but who you don't talk to. All those lists, and so many more.
But what about that person you just can't stand? What do you get for the nemesis in your life, that jerky brother-in-law, that horrible passive aggressive co-worker? What are some good gifts that subtly (or not so subtly) say "Here, I got you this because I was required to get you something, but actually, fuck off."
Never fear! I have polled the staff at Kotaku and come up with a list of spectacularly terrible gaming gifts for people you hate.
A Super-Cheap HDMI Cable
We've been over this before: the prices for in-store HDMI cables are insane and offensive. So what better way to say "I don't give a crap about you" than giving an obviously online-ordered HDMI cable? The one pictured to the side will set you back a whopping three dollars and one cent, and sends a clear message: "I don't care if you need an HDMI cable; in fact, I don't care if you live or die. I had to get you something, and so I got you this. Enjoy, asshole."
($3.01 from Amazon. Why break the bank?)
Duke Nukem Forever
You knew this one was going to be on here. Duke Nukem Forever was easily the most flatly bad game I played this year; a blandly offensive, dispiritingly dull, boring game. Hype up the giftee on it?"It's finally here! It's for hardcore manly men only! Prove your mettle and beat it!"
Then, they'll be forced to sit through hour after hour of terrible combat, infuriating puzzles, bland dialogue, and soul-crushingly unfunny jokes, all the while wondering when it will get good. Which it will not, not ever.
($9.99 at Newegg.com.)
Strategy Guides for Games They Don't Own
"Hey, I bet you like video games! What about a guide for this game? you don't even own?" There are few more worthless gifts than the gift of unnecessary information?a strategy guide for an old Game Cube game, maybe a complete walkthrough of Final Fantasy XIII or the like? or you could go insidious and find a first-edition copy of Prima's Mortal Kombat guide, which contains a bunch of incorrect fighting moves.
Imagine your frenemy mashing the controller in frustration, trying to figure out why Cyber Sub-Zero's finishing move won't work, even though they're doing the exact right button combination. Imagine that, and smile.
(Most guides around $15, Mortal Kombat $13.59 from Amazon. Appears corrected.)
Call of Juarez: The Cartel
In a near-unanimous nomination from our other editors, Ubisoft's follow-up to the surprisingly good Bound in Blood is one of the worst, most sloppy games of the year. We didn't actually review it, but our friend Justin McElroy at Joystiq summed it up thusly:
"The Cartel heartbreakingly not only fails to build upon Bound in Blood's momentum, it spits in the face of everything that made it worthwhile. It doesn't feel like a misstep for the series, it feels like an epitaph."
Give this game, and maybe it'll be an epitaph for your already doomed relationship.
($21.95 from Amazon)
EA Sports Season Ticket
If you looked at our list of gifts for the guy who only plays sports games and decided you didn't like this person enough to get him or her any of those, then try the EA Sports season pass. It sure didn't fare well upon launch, and with good reason: as our own resident sports-game expert Owen Good puts it:
"Give your frenemy the gift of five games that they have to download (at at least 6GB each) and can only enjoy for three days."
Some gift.
(24.99 Online from EA)
The Green Lantern Movie and Game
Imagine the contempt conveyed by giving not one but two Green Lantern gifts. Not only are you gifting one of the worst superhero movies in the history of forever, you're also gifting its wretched video game tie-in. "Here," you are saying, "This is the kind of thing I think you would like."
Honestly, this gift is worth giving just for the looks on everyone else's faces. "Oh, what a? nice gift! Aren't those based on comics? Comics are cool, right?"
($14.99 for the Blu-Ray, $28.99 for the Game)
The Ugliest Gamepad Ever Crafted by Man
Gaaah! Just look at it! Behold the incredible ugliness of the USB Fire Dragon Gamepad. This shit has got to be the ugliest gamepad ever created by a human; it's like it was focus-tested to be as aesthetically offensive and physically revolting as possible. It's worse than the Samurai, it's worse than the Ninja (though not by much).
There is no space in a person's house for something this ugly. It cannot be hidden away, it cannot be put in a box. Its ugliness will radiate outwards and infect the world around it. It is so ugly it will make you worse at whatever game you're playing, if only because the laser-lights that shine from it are so distracting. Truly, the USB Fire Dragon Gamepad is the Cadillac of hideous gaming peripherals.
($29.99 online.)
Obsolete Music Games
Now, let's be clear: I'm not talking about gifting the super-fun music game Rock Band 2 or the all-encompassing, best-in-class experience of Rock Band 3. I'm talking about the original 2007 game Rock Band. More specifically, I'm talking about giving an entire living room's worth of crappy, now-obsolete plastic music-game peripherals.
Forget about the re-padded, wireless Rock Band 2 drum set?give your hated friend the clacky, wired, prone-to-malfunction Rock Band 1 kit. They don't deserve the smooth, wireless guitar controllers that came with later games; give 'em the wired, tangly, weak-whammy-barred Rock Band 1 controller. As all of us who bought, retired, and eventually junk-heaped our Rock Band peripherals know, it can be very difficult to get rid of the damn things once they've invaded your house.
For bonus nastiness points, just re-gift your own old set.
($219 from Amazon. This is A) ridiculous that it's still on sale and B) an intensely expensive way to say "fuck you.")
I feel certain that there are plenty of terrible gifts that we've left off, and would love to hear more suggestions in the comments.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The White House accused House of Representatives Republicans on Sunday of playing politics with the fate of the payroll tax cut and warned that Americans could face a "devastating" tax hike if Republicans do not act.
Republican House Speaker John Boehner has distanced himself from a two-month extension to the payroll tax cut passed in the Senate by Democrats and many fellow Republicans.
"If House Republicans refuse to pass this bipartisan bill to extend the payroll tax cut, there will be a significant tax increase on 160 million hardworking Americans in 13 days that would damage the economy and job growth," said Dan Pfeiffer, a senior aide to President Barack Obama.
Pfeiffer, the White House communications director, said the House "should pass the two-month extension now to avoid a devastating tax hike from hitting the middle class in just 13 days."
"It's time House Republicans stop playing politics and get the job done for the American people," he said.
Boehner told NBC's "Meet the Press" program he opposed the Senate legislation because it would renew the tax cut for only two months. He said that would amount to "kicking the can down the road."
His comments prompted Democrats to accuse Boehner, who had faced a rebellion among rank-and-file Republican lawmakers to the payroll tax cut extension, of reneging on a deal.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? An Army intelligence analyst suspected in the biggest leak of classified U.S. documents in history makes his first court appearance on Friday accused of multiple charges including aiding the enemy, which could bring life imprisonment.
Private First Class Bradley Manning, 23, is suspected of being the source of documents that last year eventually made their way to the WikiLeaks website. WikiLeaks divulged hundreds of thousands of sensitive diplomatic cables that exposed the candid views of U.S. officials and their allies.
It also released about half a million classified U.S. files on the Iraq and Afghan wars -- actions that Washington said jeopardized national security.
"It was a very unfortunate and damaging action ... that put at risk individuals and relationships to an extent that we took it very seriously and launched a vigorous diplomatic effort to try to counter," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Thursday, referring to the WikiLeaks dump.
She declined comment on the Manning case directly.
Neither side is outlining its legal strategy ahead of the pre-trial hearings -- known as Article 32 hearings, which could run through December 23. But prosecutors aim to show there is sufficient evidence to bring Manning to trial at a general court martial on 22 criminal charges.
If convicted of all counts, Manning would face a maximum punishment of life imprisonment, reduction in rank to the lowest enlisted pay grade, forfeiture of all pay and allowances and a dishonorable discharge, the Army said in a statement.
The most serious charge, aiding the enemy, is a capital crime that carries the death penalty but the Army has indicated it does not plan to seek that punishment.
For much of the time since his detention in May 2010 in Iraq, Manning was held on a charge of improperly obtaining a classified gunsight video that showed a 2007 helicopter attack that killed a dozen people in Iraq, including two Reuters journalists. The video was released publicly by WikiLeaks.
The additional charges were brought against Manning last spring.
HEARING BEFORE BIRTHDAY
The hearing is being conducted under tight security at Fort Meade, Maryland, a military base that serves as the home of the secretive intelligence-gathering National Security Agency. The proceedings begin one day before Manning, a Crescent, Oklahoma, native, celebrates his 24th birthday.
Members of the Bradley Manning Support Network plan demonstrations outside Fort Meade on Friday and a march outside the base on Saturday joined by protesters from the Occupy movement's encampments in Washington and on Wall Street, the organizations said.
Pentagon Papers whistle-blower Daniel Ellsberg is expected to address the protesters on Saturday along with former military veterans and diplomats, Manning supporters said in an email.
Manning defenders see him as a hero. Some view the release of the cables, with their frank discussion of corruption in some countries, as having contributed to the Arab Spring protests in the Middle East.
Manning was caught after he bragged about his activities to former hacker Adrian Lamo, who turned him in to authorities, Lamo told Reuters.
Lamo said Manning, who worked as an intelligence analyst for the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade in Iraq, told him he would come into work with music on a recordable CD labeled "something like 'Lady Gaga." He would then erase the music and download data from the military's Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, known as SIPRNet.
Manning said he "listened and lip-synced to Lady Gaga's song 'Telephone' while exfiltratrating possibly the largest data spillage in (A)merican history," according to a transcript of his Internet chats with Lamo, the details of which were confirmed by Lamo to Reuters and which were published by Wired Magazine.
In his Internet chats with Lamo, Manning appears to acknowledged giving materials to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. He wrote to Lamo: "I'm a high profile source ... and I've developed a relationship with Assange."
For his part, Assange is in Britain fighting extradition to Sweden over accusations of rape and sexual assault made by two female former WikiLeaks volunteers in August 2010.
